Just picked up a 67 hood tach. It has the template for cutting and drilling but no real placemant for on the hood. Anyone know the exact location for the tach or is it just whatever looks good?

Whatever looks good sounds interesting... maybe right in the middle of the hood, that way the passenger can see it also  I think Vikki has a template on her site showing dimensions off the corner of the hood. I used one but I think it was for a 68 and realized before I started cutting too much. Used a hole saw to get the hump that sticks down centered in the traingual spot under the hood. Then needed to square out one end of the hole with a tin snips. Make sure to use a sharp new hole saw.

I was thinking of mounting it on the passenger side so the passenger knows when to close there eyes and start praying.....

Oh got to see some badazz pontiacs tear up the track today in norwalk. Not very many first gen. firebirds there. But amazingly there was 2 trans am coupes and 1 vert. 2 of them were for sale

The tach you purchased should have come with a template, as they all do as far as I know...

I think Joe he said he got a template for the drilling layout but not the placement of the template on the hood....strange...

It does have the template but as to the exact location on the hood, the instruction are vague. I want it just right. I can get it relatively close to where it should be but would like it exact.

Hey Gus, is your hood factory with the tach? Got all your measurements. Tried to go to vicki's website waited about 10 minutes for it to download template. My dial-up sucks long story. I finally gave up due to Aadd syndrome.

Thx david, now the fun part.... CUTTING. I'm thinking of using my concrete saw? You know keep the holes from getting all burred up. Was going to us the hedge trimmers but don't think they are sharp enough...

I used a 3" metal hole saw. 3" was more than enough even though the pattern shows 3.75".
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I feel like I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe. 1968 400 convertible (Scarlet) 1976 T/A - 455 LE (No Burt) 1976 T/A New baby, starting full restoration. 1968 350 - 4 speed 'vert - 400 clone (the Beast!) 1968 350 convertible - Wife's car now- 400 clone (Aleutian Blue) (Blue Angel) 2008 Durango - DD 2008 GXP - New one from NH is AWESOME! 2017 Durango Citadel - Modern is nice! I used a 4" metal hole saw for mine (after-market tach on a '69). Worked just fine. Just make sure it is sharp, a dull one will heat up the hood without cutting into it. This can cause the paint to blister. Good luck!

Well it's on the car... Man is the 67 tach a tall tach!!! Not sure about it. Figured for the purists I'd gotten harassed about the wrong tach if I went with the 68 tach. I think it will grow on me. My mother loves it per her words "paint it red with black vinyl top I'll be happy". She had a 68 bird with hood tach.

I have the 67 Tach on my 68. I like it better than the 68. I'm keeping it unless the car wakes up one day numbers matching!

I like my '67 tach better than the '68 style too.

Funny this would be mentioned about the 67-68 tachs. My 68 Bird had an original 68 short style tach. Then when I bought the one to put on the LeMans, I ordered the correct 67 tall style. At first, I could NOT get used to it at all. I almost ordered a 68 style. However, after a few months have past, I have completely reversed myself and now I like the 67 taller tach much better!

Well here it is... I measured 2-3 times and debated on putting it on. Hard to go chopping into a nice hood.

A true Pontiac signature. I can't imagine owning a Pontiac without the infamous hood tach. That's why I just had to put one of the 67 LeMans, I clarified that it was an available option before cutting into a flawless hood!

Drove the car today since putting the tach out there and have to say it looks mean out there. It seems to be fairly accurate too. Can't wait to see it glowing at night cruising the cool autumn air. Now I need to find me a ram air pan and open those scoops up.. No lowe's or homedepot air duct system... But true ram air power!!!

It went amazingly well. Bought a fresh 3 5/8" hole saw from Lowes and cleanly went through the hood and understructure.

Not sure I could sell you the hole saw and ship it to the great white north for less than what you could buy one there. If you lived near by you could borrow it. It was $20 and I already had an arbor.

Are you sure you used a 3 5/8" hole saw? Does the tach fit? The diagram shows a 3.75" hole.

I belive even a 3" hole works. The stock opening is way bigger than needed. I used a 3" saw that I already had.

I saw you posted above that a 3†saw would work so I figured 3 5/8 would be fine. They didn’t have 3 3/4. Didn’t try to install the tach yet. Need to take it off my other hood.

I am going to dig out my old gasket to see how big the hole is. Can you get a gasket for the hood tachs still?
