I am going drag racing again next year with my Firebird just run what you brung meets about 5 times a year and my car is not a daily driver I only do 500 miles a year. I hope to get a couple of things sorted out over the winter ready for next spring one is a posi but the other is my factory shifter.
Now as you know these factory shifters are not good for changing manually for drag racing! It's too easy to miss a gear by shifting straight from 1st to D or into neutral. So as I can hang on to the changes until 5,000rpm as it's changing about 4.500rpm at the moment as I have already fitted an adjustable modulater which holds the gear change for plus or minus 2mph.
I want to fit a B & M shifter maybe a quick silver or similar. The 67 Firebird uses a rod to change gear as opposed to the 68 and 69 which use a cable. I know I will have to convert it to a cable shift using the bracket that bolts to the transmission pan.
My car has a TH350 instead of the Powerglide and it has been modded by fileing the detent on the shifter so I can select all 3 gears manually.
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket shifter to their 67 Auto Firebird if so which one?
67 Firebird 350, TH350 auto Convertible, B&M 3000 TC, 4bbl Edelbrock Performer carb and intake Black Jack headers, disc brake conversion. 10 bolt chevy axle with 3.73's and B&M Rachet shifter.
I havent found a good aftrmrkt ratchet sftr that fits the factory console. But think some else here did??? Been look'n at "Lokar" a/t shftrs. They have one that attaches to the trany and uses a rod like an M/T shfter
I put the lokar auto shifter in my 69. Hooked to a T400 with a rod. Converted to a floor shift from column shift and this fit well into the console I had. (67 console)
Can't remember the model number, but the shifter was a tunnel mount. 6 inch stick length. I opted out of the LED indicator for gear selection since the cost was another $200 extra. Since I didn't have a hole in the tunnel, this was a better option than the tranny mount. The hole cut in the tunnel was alot smaller. If you go with the tranny mount shifter you just need to get a longer shifter handle.
I put a black piece of lexan to cover the hole where the bezel went and attached the boot to the lexan. Lexan attahced to the mounting holes for the bezel.
Thanks guys I will look into the lokar shifters. 69 Bird I found a couple of sites with lokar shifters I found a tail mount and trans mount but not a tunnel mount.
Is the Lokar shifter a ratchet shifter? what is it like to shift manually as I want to shift 1st, 2nd and then drive without shifting through 2nd to drive or to neutral.
Thanks Andy
