2 questions:

1. What if any stripe would have came originally on a '67 400 (convertible)? The car I'm looking at is repainted with no stripe. But I have a scanned copy of the original dealer sales sheet with code "491". Also hand written on the sales sheet are the various options including "stripe". Per another '67 Firebird's PHS docs the "491" code = "rally stripes" (standard with code "334" [the 326HO]).

2. A couple of days ago I asked whether the hood tach came standard with in dash gauges. The responses were no, either could be ordered separately. Ok. Per this same '67 Firebird PHS docs (not for car in question) code "444" = Rally Gauge Cluster & Hood Mtd. Tach, while code "704" = Tachometer Hood Mounted.

So to me it sounds like the hood tach could be ordered separately, but the gauges always came with the tach. Is this PHS info incorrect?

1. Perhaps it was a dealer installed pinstripe? I have never seen a 'factory' non-HO car with HO stripes, but back then you could probably get anything you wanted to pay for. I don't have my '67 PHS info in front of me, but on my '68 PHS, line 491 states "delete HO strips, 350 HO only". and "rally stripes - std with 350 HO". So perhaps you could order one that way.

2. I have seen many cars with rally guages but no hood tach. Perhaps it was an option, but I've never seen it. Maybe another fgf mystery. Again, my '68 PHS line 434 shows "hood mounted tach". And line 444 shows "rally gauge cluster". No mention of hood tach.

Thanks again for your reply. As seen by my "signature" I have had many A-bodies, but no F-bodies. It seems that each year of these F-bodies options, etc. changed dramatically.

For what it's worth this is a fairly early car with a February build date.

Also for full disclosure the words "rally gauges" is also handwritten on the sales sheet. No mention of tach.

I'd say spring for the PHS for your car. It's good for some late night reading. I think it runs around $75 these days and takes a couple weeks to get unless you pay xtra for the fax back option.

You could order ralley stripes on any car. They were HO stripes without the "HO".

I have a 67 Firebird that has gone through the PHS. I have the rally gauge cluster & hood mtd tach per the dealer order sheet line 444. There is no separate line for just the cluster or just the tach for 1967 according to the documentation I have received.

No stripe would have come by default on a '67 400 convertible. A rally stripe was an option; it was like the HO stripe or Sprint stripe, but did not say HO or Sprint. The available colors were white, red and black.

Attached is the '67 Master Order as published 1/67. Dealers did not discard their old pads as soon as a new one was issued; I have seen '67 Firebirds ordered in March of '67 ordered on early '66 pads. Because of this, options on the vintage order sheets changed. The one attached is the one sent by PHS for '67 Firebirds.

491 is the Rally Stripe. The 491 applied to a 334 option would not be the same stripe as the 491 on a Sprint or any other Firebird.

Yes, the hood mounted tach could be ordered without Rally gauges, but was also included with the Rally gauge package on '67 only. Most cars equipped with Rally gauges and/or hood tach were manual transmission cars, but not all.

Thanks for clearing this up. Your timing is great as I hope to see the car this weekend. The gauges are there, but no hood tach. I'll need to inspect for possible front-end damage or perhaps get a story.

The '68 400 I just picked up last fall had the hood, tach, and front bumper stolen off of it in the early '90's. The PO used to leave his car parked out in his front yard, and one day it all 'dissapeared'. Fortunately, his insurance company replaced the hood and bumper with GM NOS they found somewhere. (they couldn't find a tach though). He had paperwork to back this all up. And after I have taken 80% of the car apart, there is no evidence of any front end damage. So I have a 43 year old car with a 21 year old 400 hood and bumper.

To add further confusion to this tread, I believe there were only 2 stripes available, rally stripes and HO stripes. Never sure were the term Sprint Stripe came from other than from the Tempest which in fact did contain the word "Sprint" in the makeup of the stripe. I am unaware of any FGF Sprints that had the word Sprint in the Stripe.
