I've got a friend who says he came across this in a barn in his area (south AL) and I'm wondering how rare is this combination?

This is the first '67 Firebird I've seen with the 8 lug option, he hasn't had a chance to run the PHS to see if it might be a prototype. Even the tires are bias ply, obviously been there for a while.

Any thoughts? Alan B.

Looks like someone changed out the spinals from a
Grand Prix or maybe the brake drums are interchangable.
I put a Grand Prix console in my bird, not rare just
different and not factory.

to much of everything is just enough

What ever the case, 8 lugs look good on almost any Pontiac.

what would be involved with the swap? I realize the big car had 5 on 5 pattern, and the bird has the 5 on 4 3/4 pattern...is it simply a case of bolting the drum on? What about the front spindle?

I'm just learning about Firebirds...

I looked into this a few years ago. You are right about the bolt pattern-so no the drums don't bolt on. Also they are 11x2-1/2 on rear so backing plates don't bolt up. Axles do not interchange and the entire rear is different. In front the spindles will bolt to the bird upper a-arm & ball joint but the lower is different and none of the big car stuff works on the bird. It could be done but would require much fabrication & modification. Pontiac did consider these for GTO and built a prototype but did not produce them. Several years ago there was an article by a guy who did the conversion. The result was great but VERY costly and time consuming.
