Thanks for all the info we have gained from this sight. We purchased a Firebird, but there is a problem with the VIN. We have been looking for a project for my son and ran across an ad for a 1968. Complete but the front end and subframe are off. Subframe has been powder coated. Pretty solid car all around, will need quarters and some floor work. So we worked a good deal on the car and headed home. My son says I really like the vent windows............ Thats when it hit me, the body has to be a 67. I have looked in all the areas. The VIN plate on the dash matches the title and the build tag on the firewall matches the Vin tag all 1968. But there are holes in the hinge post where the 67 vin should be and the stamped vin on the cowl indicates 1967. It appears this was done a long time ago. I had the 67 VIN off the cowl checked to be sure it did not show up as stolen. It is clear. What do we do? Drive it as a 68? Can we get a bond title to match the 1967 VIN without the actual VIN tag from the hinge post? Looking for opinions. Thanks, I am happy with the car but want to make things as right as I can.
Sounds like a total that someone put back together with odd donor car parts. Maybe a major front end damage since the obvious front end work. I wouldn't goo trying to get different paperwork on it because nowadays if it's a salvage car I don't think they let you sell it for use on the street.
If you bought it recently, you may want to be sure that you have exceptionally accurate and detailed contact information for the seller.
Personally I'd go back to the seller and try to get at minimum a price adjustment, at most a full refund on the car. Although chances are you will own the car for years and not have any issues with the documentation, what happens if you decide to sell the car?
Most DMVs will issue a new VIN and title based on a law enforcement inspection and clearance of the stamped hidden VIN. It is visible in two places, one on the cowl and one on the firewall. This would be the only legal route...but either way you will never have the same value as a properly tagged and titled '67 or '68.
Since there are four possible VIN combinations based on the partial VIN on the cowl, are you sure you submitted the correct full VIN for a LEIN check?

I am unsure what you mean. Isn't there only one combination. The vin on the cowl reads "7U160XXX", so don't all 1967 firebirds start with 22337? I think with the 67's there is only one possibility. Let me know if this is correct. I am going to try to talk to the state to see if an assigned vin is a possibility. Not too worried about it affecting value, I am just don't want issues later.
For coupe, that is correct. Built in Lordstown. 223377U164252 and 322 were both built 2nd week of July 1967, so yours is a very late production car.
When it comes to decoding cowl tags, there are more variations. Sorry for the confusion, just got back from a long day of cutting firewood in the north woods. I don't think my brain has thawed yet.
