Hopefully somebody could help....On my 68 Firebird after I drive for a while and stop...When I go to restart the car the Temp warning lightis inevitably goes on.
The light has never gone on while I am driving or even idling at a stop or traffic light.
As noted above when I go to restart the car, the dash warning light goes on and stays on from anywher from a few seconds to maybe 30-60 seconds after I start driving.
Do you know the cause or fix for this? I have tried changing my thermostat and radiator cap....this has not helped...I am
thinking of changing the temp sending unit next..
Please let me know what can be causing this light to go on momemtarily, up to 30 seconds after I start driving again.

Thanks,

Lee

The temp switch triggers at around 240-245, when you shut the car down, it heat soaks and triggers the light when you start it. Then the coolant circulates through the system and cools down, light goes off. I'd try the temp switch replacement first...they do go bad.

Thank You....So in a way you are saying it may be acceptable or Normal to happen?. I just don't remember that happening with my original 68 that I had years ago? Please let me know.

Thanks,

I'd change the switch, 10 or 15 bucks is cheap enough. If you're still having an issue start checking the rest of the cooling system, radiator(how old), waterpump clearance from the divider plates to the impeller...etc. If you have access to or want to buy one, an infrared thermometer gun is good to have to diagnose these issues. Check the stat housing when you start the car and you know it will trigger the light, what's the temp? Check the radiator where the top hose goes in, should be within 10-15 degrees of stat temp rating, then check the rad at the outlet at the bottom, a good drop of about 40 degrees or so should be observed. Let us know what happens.

No, this would not be normal.

Does your bird have a standard shroud, fan, x-fillers, and baffles? There are many cooling issues with these cars that are easily solved with stock parts. Does it have the original radiator? Is it clean?

Or it may be as simple as replacing a switch like Jeff states.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

Thanks for the quick comments...Yes I believe standard Shroud and upgraded fan from Four Blade to Six I believe .....Please excuse me....Radiator is very clean, looks in great condition though since I am the second owner I am sure it is not original.......Not quite sure what X-Fillers and Baffles are? ( Can you explain).

Agsin, when car is being driven no issue...it is only when I go to restart it...

Thanks...Please let me know.

If its a new problem, probly the switch.
Could be water pump start start'n to go bad.
What size fan blade?
Is it mounted 50/50 into shroud?

Wouldnt worry about x-fillers(upper close out panels) and baffles(rubber seals in front of core support) yet unless your have more then stock power or A/C.

Not to digress...I've seen many cooling system related posts that refer to the fan being 50/50 in/out of the shroud...don't really understand why? Every vehicle I've owned, seen or worked on with a fan clutch type system has had the blade fully inside the shroud. The only thing I come up with is that the clutch thermostat may be too close to the radiator? Maybe just inherent of these first gens?

It seems to be that the fan is slightly more effective when placed 1/3 to 2/3 in the shroud. I believe it is because there is less resistance to a pull through the funnel than a push through a funnel.
