goals. QUIET FOR STREET. High flowing for 250 shot pf nitrous ontop of 500hp 468
I have a 68 with 468cu e heads(round port), extreme energy 274 comp cam, dougs headders 3.5 collectors. I did a dsc mini tub kit in the rear with 315/35/17 goodyear eagle f1-d3 tires. the front of the rear springs are in the stock perches, but the rear springs have been moved inward 2 inches on each side, as the shock towers have been moved in as well. The fuel tank is narrowed 2 1/4 inches on each side.
I want really quiet exhaust on the street as I live in a subdivision, however I want it loud too at the track, and quite frankly.. when I want to show off or piss on a ricer at the light.. .hehe
the motor should have around 510 Hp, with 600 tq at the crank, plus 2 x 125 shots of nitrus.. so i'll be pushin 750 hp.
my idea is for cutouts at the collector, a crossover.. then 3 inche primary tubes to 3 inch vt mufflers with 2.5 inch tail pipes.. taking in account that exhaust gasses cool and 3 inch isn't needed that far out and the problem that no one wants to bend 3 inch pipe in raleigh and its going to be tight.
its my belief that I won't need more then 2.5 inch flow after the muffler.. unless I hit the nitrous which i'll have the exhaust cutouts to take care of the extra flow over 500HP.
the car is lowered to the ground 2 inches..maybe more.. its pretty low. I really need the muffler cases to fit there holes.. is there a vt muffer that will 'fit the bill' ? thanks for all your help.. stock length muffler is what.. 14 inches?
I've always been a fan of the Dynomax Turbo Mufflers to keep noise to a low grumble. They won't be super quiet, but it will keep the neighbors happy and you out of tickets. Just a good, low rumble. You are pushing just about 10-20 HP more than me (minus the NO2), I can tell you that you do NOT want the Flowmaster 40's I have on my car.
I'm 3" all the way out. Believe it or not, they will JUST FIT between the leaf springs and the body panel. It is VERY TIGHT. I'll go get a pic and post it here.
My problem isn't dragging mufflers, it's dragging headers.
I have no idea what the stock muffler length is, never had 'em.
First, don't dump them. God my car was too loud to drive with the dumps in. Here is the driver's side done, the passenger side is still a dump. As you can see, the driver's side has good room for the 3"
Interesting your passenger side is tighter, mine is too. 3" here as well all the way to the tails. Also, I have the Dynomax Super Turbos mentioned and IIRC I just fitted the 16" in there but it's not optimal. The sound is about right though and if I want to lay on the ground I can open the dumps. If I had it to do over again I'd look into the Ram Air Restorations oval exhaust systems.
At first I thought something was wrong with the car, but there was a 69 Camaro on the rack next to me and the measurements were the same. Guess they are all like that.
BTW, I've seen them out the back in every way conceivable, I decided to go the hidden look. Still glad I did. I was partly concerned I would drag anything that showed out the back, and partly wanted it to be hidden... not that there's anything stealthy about this car.
Sounds like the mufflers you want are the VTs. Quiet at low speed and loud when you smash the peddle. I bought a pair last fall and hope to put them on in the spring. I have a post on them on the PY site. Sorry I can't give a first hand account yet. I have Dynomax now and the drone is to much for me. They were a lot more quiet then the spin tech mufflers I had before them.
