Don't you have holes in the deck lid for those letters?

My deck lid was rusted and wrecked.Has any body
cut the pins off the emblems and put them on with
double sided tape? Some of the holes are off set,
looks scary to drill into my new deck lid.Mike

Mike, while it is an idea to do that, don't do it! With all that poncho power you have they'll just blow off! Kidding laugh While i don't have a template of mine handy, i can go out and measure them for you.Won't be 100% accurate, maybe 99% but trust me it will be a lot better than double sided tape. smile I'll get back to you.

Its not the measurements that are hard, its the exact hole drilling (ALL are offset and different from eachother). I say line them up perfectly, outline with thin non-permanent marker, and glue with an appropriate adhesive. I can't see anyone drilling the pin-holes correctly for all seven letters.

Easiest way i can think of is to cut out the strip from old lid that had holes in them and use it as a template, unless thats not possible, in which case I would take several pieces of heavy paper, and put one letter on each, pushing the pins through, then getting them correctly aligned, and taping the paper as they sat correctly and in line, and then remove letters and use it as a template. smile

How many of you guys need a template like that? It's probably relatively easy to make one.

.....or, find someone with a lid that has the letters removed(Terry, are ya listening??), lay some paper on top/bottom of lid and spray paint the holes, or punch 'em out???? Fold paper up, send USPS,could be done???

I took some pictures of mine with/without decklid letters.Had to be a close up shot so you need to judge using the trunk lock as a guide("T" lower hole is not exactly center of the trunk lock) from these pics.I realize you are pressed for time and this may help you a bit if you study the pics and should get you close to what you need in a pinch.Either that or hold off on the paint.Goodluck and have a look.

Mike,

Don't cut the tabs off of original parts. They are to valuable to damage with short cuts. If you're going to cut the pins and glue on the letters with emblem adhesive or tape, do that with reproduction parts that can be replaced.

If you still need a template, I'll cut out a cardboard doll and scribe through the holes for you. I need to wax underneath the letters anyway, lol. I'll do it accurately. Send me your address by PM.

If you center punch each hole, pilot drill and then go through with the correct size, it should all work out. If you have doubts, get a scrap of metal and do a practice run. You would want to verify the template anyway.

I'm gonna be needing a template for mine as well, so if anyone has the time and is willing to make one I'd greatly appreciate it. Let me know by email and I can get you my mailing address. [email protected]

firebird_red, superb offer you are making, thats the only way it can be done without modifying the pins. There is no way anyone can drill those holes to their proper specs without an original template, to the 1/25th of an inch. Any other attempt would probably be a mess.

Template is finished. It's a piece of sheetmetal match drilled through an original trunk panel. Just c-clamp it down and drill through it. If it works out, I hope folks will hold on to it and pass it on the the next guy who needs it. It would be a nightmare to put these letters on if your original trunk was destroyed. I've heard of emblems being taken off of peoples classic cars, so apart from being original, there is a good reason to keep them bolted down!
