Yes, this is very common in Minnesota. (all those Sweedes and Norweedgins here I guess!)
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Studded tires for sure! Thanks , brings memories...never diod the drag racing , but used to dop the ice racing...we plowed a nice curvy track and raced....
the most important thing was to know "how to" if you went thru the ice....
roll a window down some so water can get in...while you sink ...look for the hole in the ice so you have it located...when water is to 75% or more i the cabin , open the door ,swim to the opening in the ice....never had to do it, but you need to know how to, just in case...dont panic!

Some strange specimens on that strip!
Have not seen drag racing here but have seen tracks laid out on various lakes (one up by Cache Creek / Ashcroft) and races on them....gotta love the corners....
