Can anyone tell me if the bolts that hold the steering arms to the spindle are specially made or can I get suitable replacements from a good hardware store?
I am doing a complete front suspension rebuild and conversion to disc brakes on my 67 firebird and somehow tossed the original steering arms in the trash! I ordered new arms from Ames but no one has replacement bolts... Does anyone have advice or even a set of originals in good shape they would be able to sell?
thanks my internet connection has been down due to storms (was out of power for a week too) so I can't check this forum a lot, will definitely check it tomorrow-

Are you using a disc brake conversion kit?
I'm sure that someone that has done this conversion can clarify this, but doesn't the conversion kit include all the hardware you'll need? The only thing you have to re-use are your old steering arms....which you have on order.
If the conversion kit doesn't include all the hardware, I think that 2 1/2 inch long automotive grade 8 "shoulder" bolts and nuts, with "fine" (20 pitch) threads, would work to secure the steering arms.

I bought the conversion kit from inline tube. It includes a lot but not those particular bolts- My uncle said he would get the right bolts for his next visit when we start the reassembly, but I will check the forum again periodically to make sure I get the right ones. Brett, the Grade 8 fine thread sounds good, the shoulder bolt seems right too, I searched for a while and didn't find any online but I think that is the right track. Pci, let me know what you find out
thanks! James

One way or the other, something will work for you.
Oddly enough, I've had good luck with nuts and bolts at the local LOWE'S. They actually have a good selection of automotive grade stuff.

I agree they do seem to have a good selection, also a company called fastenall is right down the road from me. They car all types of fasteners. Oh and tractor supply company has tons of bolts and nuts in grade 8.

I think I have the bolts on my bench as I went with a C6 set up on my car. If you need them and I can find them. LOL You can have them.

got it-
it is pretty funny really, the original suspension parts were so ugly and old looking I told my uncle they looked like they were from the civil war era

I purchased my conversion kit from Matt's Classic Bowties, and it included new steering arm bolts and nuts. Might be worth seeing if he has them separate. Also, if you go the hardware store route, make sure you are buying grade 8 stuff, a lot of pressure in that area when turning. Matt's is out of the Northern California area I believe.
