What do you use for security on your car? Anything other than alarms?

Goodness, I remember how when I lived in NYC when I was younger and had a 69 coupe, I was so nervous that it would be stolen. I had ignition cutoff, ignition switch lock, steering column lock and battery cutoff.

Now in South Carolina, I have left the keys in with the top down. Not that we don't have theft, but where you leave makes a difference. My address is 123 Main Street....

no substitution for a locked garage

Our biggest security threat is keeping the field mice out of the house (no rats in Alberta). We got cats!

Never leave them out of my site unless in a locked garage.

I think I will get one of those trackers you can hide in the car. It will call you of the car moves outside your defined security fence.

I use one of those "Clubs" on the steering wheel when I pop into a store or go into a restaurant. It probably only makes me feel better and keeps kids from lifting the car. A pro could have one of these stolen in seconds.

At least I know a pro will be agonizing over which of the millions of '69 Z28's he should grab first. Probably doesn't even turn his/her head toward a lowly fgf.

I agree with 68tpls400, if i take it out im either in it or its parked whee it cam be plainly be seen. Too easy to steal.

Like others say, I seldom have the car far from my line of sight unless it is in a secure location. I do worry somewhat about the loss of easily removed and hard to replace parts when it is at a show or cruise.

I just dont worry about it....its fun to enjoy it...worrying slows down the enjoyment....park it top down just about anywhere....had a hidden kill switch , but later had it removed after it malfunctioned...

i have a viper alarm (currently disconnected) that has a pretty cool option. if you're driving in the ghetto, like we all do so frequently ;), you can hit a button under the dash and if you are car jacked, indicated to the alarm by the courtesy light coming on and going off (door open/close), the car will drive for 30 seconds and then the engine will die and can't be started unless you hold the button on the alarm remote and the hidden button under the dash together.

Amen! If someone is stupid enough to risk grand theft auto over a FGF or a LeMans in my case, let them have it. I have it insured with an agreed upon value that is higher than what the car would get on the open market anyway. For ten years we drove our 68 Bird EVERYWHERE we went and I mean EVERYWHERE. Grocery shopping, doctor visits, Lowes, Walmart it didn't matter. I even drove the Bird on a sales route for P&G when I was consulting for them with their Folgers coffee division up in Buffalo. There were days I put over 200 miles on that car going from one sales call to another, I didn't care, they were paying for gas/mileage.

In my opinion it's all about driving these cars and enjoying them. Worrying about scratching them, dings & dents and someone stealing them just sucks all the fun right out of owning them. LOL Besides, if someone is bent on taking your car, they are probably a professional, they are going to get regardless of what you do to try and stop them. The best thing you can do is have an "AGREED UPON VALUE" insurance policy that is paid and up to date! And note that I said "agreed upon value" policy NOT a "stated value" policy, MAJOR difference between the two as discussed MANY TIMES before!

There is no dollar value that I could put on mine. There is, of course, an insurance "value" in my policy but being my 1st car and owned for 43 years, that number is almost meaningless to me.

i wish i still had my first bird 1969 ragtop OHC 6 3 speed on the floor. deluxe interior it was with white top. at the same time i had a plain jane 350 2 speed, plain interior green on green. that was in 1979

Can't count the number of times I've heard people at cruises and shows say that they wish they had the Firebird they let get away decades ago.

I agree that there isn't a value that I would consider adequate for my first bird but I think my daughter would be more upset about it being stolen than I would. I'm sure if I looked in some obscure area of my car her name would be there in permanent marker as claim of ownership. Meanwhile I worry more about parking lot dings and some idiot backing into it somewhere than anything else.

Though insured, I'd hate for someone to take it from me. No joy rides for anyone but me. Anyone use an ignition cut out or electrical cut out system? If so, where'd you get it?

I have the battery cut out I use if I may be away from it for a few minutes or so, but try my best to keep it in site. I also put on a club if its not in direct site. Don't think I've left it out of site for more than 15 minutes.

Without a starter heat shield, I sometimes have about 10-15 minutes that nobody could start mine until it cools down anyway.

I favor the "keep in site" method anyway because a club or ignition disabling won't stop the tow hook or strip-in-place-in- seconds. My other favored method is to simply avoid the higher theft/vandal areas. I cannot even recall the last time my '68 has crossed into the Chicago city limits. (Maybe 35 years?)

My car was in wedding a couple weeks ago ( my daughters boyfriends brother),we are good friends with his parents .The plan was for the car owners to chauffeur the bridal party around town,but when the time came I threw the keys to Andy (daughters boyfriend).His dad said to me "are you nuts",I told him its insured and Andy is an apprenticing autobody guy,if hi cracks it up we will fix it.It made his day!

Yeah nobody's going to drive my car away(I could write a book on how to start it) but it only takes a second to hook it up and away we go. I guess my deal would be to back it in when parked so nobody could hook it up from behind and rollaway with it.

I'm not overly concerned about it. Usually when i do take it somewhere , i'll come out and there will be a few people looking at it trying to figure out how i got it there. there is no interior. Just 2 seats and steering wheel.

I have a hidden switch that disables an ignition relay (for the HEI). At least it would slow them down a bit.
