What are good ways to get interior spray paint to stick to new interior parts? I have new kick panels and the paint does not stick well. It is already coming off after testing the vent control a few times. They are going to look terrible after getting is and out a few times.

I just cleaned mine very well with soap and water several times. Wiped the panel down with plastic safe paint prep cleaner. But i used spray dyes, I did one at the beginning of the summer and left it outside just t see how it would adhere. it still looks like the day i painted it. If you are going to use paint, there is a product you can buy for plastics to enhance paint adherence so you can use most any paint. I think paint is too thick looking though. The thing that kills ya when painting interior parts is silicone. Like armorall, you need to make sure it’s very clean.

Is it not sticking or are you getting fish eye? Little spots where the paint like craters?

No problem with paint coverage or bubbling. The paint just comes off very easily with any abrasion, like running a finger nail across the grain.

What kind of paint are you using?

OER interior paint. I did not use the plastic primer or adhesion promoter.

You should try it , the type of plastics used on interiors have a tendency to sweat so that even most glues wont stick, including epoxys and and even fiber glass resins will just sit on top of the plastic. The plastic adhesion promoter it kinda like a self etching primer for these plastics. It gives the paint something to grab onto. Ive heard that lacquer paint works pretty good as the thiner is actually a solvent based paint unlike enamels.

What color are going to and from ?
If it was me doing this . i would go for the adhesion promotor , followed by a light coat and color of lacquer primer(white, light gray). Then paint with light coats of lacquer based paint, that should hold.

you can go to your jobber parts store / paint shop and have them mix up interior dye , put it spray cans if needed. thats what im goint to do for my font seat covers , they arent flat and not %100 glossy they can mix anythig i want and if you bring them the paint code they can usually get a real close mix.
i dont know what CA has for real car parts stores , But here in NH, we have robbins,Sanal , Napa parts the ones that have real replacement parts .Not junk like Auto zone , Reilly's ,Advance autoparts. I call those wax and cleaner shops. well windshield wipers too.

In CA I've got Napa and Reibes. I like Riebes as the staff are helpful and they have Speed Channel on the TV over the cash register.

After reading lots of very positive reviews I used SEM interior spray dyes/paints. they also supply plastic parts cleaner and adhesion promoter. I had friends who used it on everything including steering wheels with no chipping, flaking ever. I used it on almost everything in my interior with no problems yet after 3 years. You can get SEM at professional upholstery shops or supply places. There are tons of shades and different gloss levels of clear to spray over the colour if you wish. Yup , robbins carries SEM also. I just like the fact i can eiher bring in a piece to match or bring in the color code and they can mix a pint for me or put it in a spray can if im lazy.

Acetone removed the paint without negative affects to the plastic.
