I agree Fbody69. I have a BHC dated 12/14/67 from a Ram1 Bird that does not list 742.

The ones in question are dated 2/23/68 Ram1 and 6/27/68 on the Ram2.

If anyone has a factory Black (code A) 68 Bird, I would be interested in comparing info on that as well.

Thanks

A search of PY yielded the following:

The box "74" with a "2" in it is for an internal assembly
operation on your vehicle and is not an option. I believe
that "742" is the operation for installing seat or shoulder
belts.

Now, the question is, what would the trim tag state when Firebird production ran over 1 year?

Example: A 69 Firebird coupe tag states 11A, how do you know if that was the 1st week of November 68, or the 1st week of November 69? Would these both have 69-22367 on the tag?

Production continued to 11A (first week of Nov 69).

A Nov 68 car would be LOR or LOS.
A Nov 69 car would be NOR. LOR had stopped production on March 15, 69. LOS stopped in May 69.

So what does 142 mean stamped in my cowl tag before the time built code? Probably an easy answer but I can't find it. By the way my camera sucks!

Thought I would add this to the discussion (from a few posts ago) about 1969 Firebird/Trans Am production runs.

This 1969 Trans Am, coming up at the 2009 Mecum Auction, was possibly the last one built, with a data plate showing Nov. 1969.

Here's the link : http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail...9_Trans_am_S215

I know that eventually the link will go dead, so here's the text:

This 1969 Trans Am is a true barn find. It was found in a elderly couples' garage in 1988. It hadn't been driven since 1978. The odometer read 28,000 miles. This car was built in November of '69, the last week of production of the 1969 Firebird.

This could possibly be the very last 1969 Trans Am made. Because of the late build date, this car has the very rare and sought after Formula Steering Wheel. These Formula wheels were installed on Trans Ams starting in September of '69, so there are very few on 69 Trans Ams. Because this car was only on the road for a few years in the 70s, it was in amazing original condition. It still had all the original belts, hoses, cap, rotor, plug wires, tires and shocks.

During the restoration, everything was kept as original as possible. The interior is 100% original, even the carpeting. Other options that are shown on the PHS Documentation are 4-speed transmission, AM radio, Dual horns, Rally II wheels and the rare stack gages. Because of light rust, it needed to be repainted. It was stripped of all paint (underside also) and brought back to its original beautiful condition.

Since 1998 it has won numerous 1st place trophies and awards. I have seen quite a few other 1969 TAs, but this TA rises above the rest with its Formula Steering Wheel, Stack Gages, 4-speed transmission and 100% original blue interior. This truly original 1969 Trans Am is sure to make any owner proud.

Highlights:

Numbers matching 400 Ram Air III
M20 4-speed transmission
3:55 posi rear end
34,000 miles
Interior 100% original
Original quarters and floors
Original Ram Air pans
Extremely rare Formula Steering Wheel
Rare stack gages
Still have original belts, hoses, and plug wires
Rally II Wheels
PHS Documentation

I have these cars for so long that if I did noticed it before I'd forgot.
Maybe that tim came with the wheel option difference?
the reason for the differences is because one is a standard interior and one is a deluxe interior!! the steering wheelw/bird is the deluxe. surprising noone has told you this b 4.

Nope, that's not it. There is a deluxe interior option, a deluxe seat belt option, a steering wheel option, and a custom trim option. Each option has different items and can exist without the others. I have deluxe interior cars that do not have the chrome dash band. They do have the stainless pedal trim and dash grab bar of the custom trim package however. One has standard belts, one has deluxe belts. Both have deluxe steering wheels.

My '68 01B (January) LOR car:

Bird Glass-Yes
Deluxe Interior-No
Dash Chrome Trim-Yes
Glove Box Bird-No
Pull Handle-No
Steering Wheel-Don't know, currently has after market wheel.

Question regarding trim/options;
What criteria determined which cars received wheel opening moldings?

Here is a web page on the 1969 Firebird cowl tags.
It is mostly for the mysteries of the 'H' code like the Camaros have.
I based it off of Kurt S' web site on them.
(except for Firebirds)

It would be possible to have a database for the other years if it is wanted?

And for the updated Tags:

I have a few option questions one of the letter codes unknown to the 67 Firebird has to be the tilt steering and Yellowbirds article shown for the 68 option makes me believe that every interior upgrade may have its own letters as well? I have a 68 with Deluxe interior with no chrome dash trim no Deluxe buckles no Deluxe steering wheel these could all be unidentified codes in the 67 as well. Any feedback would be great. Thanks Dan

Has the mystery option, relating to the 3"D" code on the trim tag of the 1967s, ever been solved/determined yet ?

If not, could it be for the "Safeguard Speedometer" ?

I have the "D" on mine , and I have seen the tag (and option list) of a similar, but more highly optioned car, that did not have it. After comparing my option list for the shared and unshared options between the 2, I think I am down to this one as being the 1 difference.

Anyone else have a 67 with the "D" code and this speedo ?

Tilt steering wasn't installed by Fisher, so it wouldn't on the tag. Same with the speedo.

3D - LAMP COURTESY (coupe-only underdash lights)
Documented via a UOIT (basically a Fisher broadcast sheet).

So would this be the code for the "courtesy" lamps (under the dash near both kick panels), even though they were standard equipment on the convertible ?

OK, I'll bite... what is a Safeguard speedometer?

Sounds like a rev limiter.

I think its the speedometer that makes a sound once passed the 'limit' you set it at

looked it up , found this:
Quote:
The Safeguard speedometer, which included a low-fuel warning lamp, allowed the driver to use a pointer to select a speed that when exceeded would sound a warning

Hello, I’m new to the forum. Thanks for the opportunity post. I have a phs documented 1968 firebird convertible 400, loaded, pink with white interior. It was a gm internal ordered car and purchased by gm. it was photographed for high performance pontiac magazine a few years ago. It was candy orange at the time. They talked to nancy sinatra’s manager about being in the photo shoot. She was very excited but disappointed she couldn’t do it because she had a concert that evening. She said he could interview her for the magazine later. I never saw the magazine. Does anyone remember it and if so can they email me the text and magazine issue date or post it here on the site? I also have a few
other questions which I hope some others might like to know the answer to. I will also email nancy the same questions and post any replies I get. I will also email paula reck who was the runner up in 1968 miss America contest and official Pontiac spokesperson. I personally spoke with her at the time of the photo shoot but she was busy and asked me to call back but I never did.

What print ads or commercials did Pontiac feature a pink or other color 400 convertible in with or without nancy? I think there was a print ad with her wearing a fluffy pink sweater and a commercial where she sang the boots song and got in the car.

Where can I see or get those ads?

Nancy has stated that delorean gave her a pink convertible in 1967 for her movin with nancy show which aired late December 1967. The color was fashioned from a tube of pink lipstick, probably hers. There is a black and white picture showing the back end of it in her garage with her in the foreground and a 1957 thunderbird. Since it was late in the year was this a 1968 car, why would he give her a left over 1967?

What engine size and interior color was this car?

Did Pontiac give a car away to anyone in the 1968 miss usa contest and if so what was it, model, color, options etc?

Thanks for any info you have.

Hi All...Much to my joy I recenctly acquired a 69 converitible for which I have the PHS documentation. This leads me to my question, not really a mystery I admit, but just something I'm curious if someone might be able enlighten me on...

The order sheet indicates that on 03/10/70 the car was shipped to Mecum Pontiac-Buick in Marengo IL. From what I gather this is a a pretty late date to be shipping a 69 from the factory. To add to my curiousity, the body plate indicates, 69-22367, NOR 712053, with a date code of 10C, and the other trim codes jive with the car.

That seems like a long time for a rather average car, (Standard 350 auto T/H, power steering/brakes/top), to be sitting around the factory. No other special codes, marks, etc...are noted on the build sheet. So,there you have have it...just scratching my head here.

I think it's why the 69 was nicknamed the 70 and a half. They kept shipping them because there were no 70s being made until well into 1970 ... But I could be wrong.

Otherway around. The 1st year model of the Second Generation F body is referred to as the 70-1/2 because they were 1st sold so late in the 1970 model year. Same reason why early 1st Gen Mustangs are called '64-1/2's when sales started in April 1964 as opposed to the "normal" start of the 1964 model year in September 1963.
