I was pulling my brake booster out last night and was looking for some codes on the tabs. I only saw one tab with a code and on both sides it was 29.

The brake bar shaft had A8 on it also. Anyone have a clue if this may be an original or what it might have been for. I guess if it's not the original it would not be worth a rebuild?

I was also trying to identify my power steering gear box and was wondering if it is the original one. From lock to lock is about 2 1/2 turns. It is leaking pretty bad from the back seal and wonder if I should I get a rebuild or rebuild this one?

Casting number 5691676 with a 28 or 29 code.
The alum part had a 5689025

Any ideas?

Hi Harold,

According to the PHS docs, should your car have variable ratio?

7800713 is the part number for PS wo Variable ratio.

7805160 is the part number for PS with variable ratio.

If you need any other numbers sentd me a pm and I will look them up for you.

I can not find anything in the Phs document that list what type of steering it has. It list power steering but not type. Where should I be looking at on the documents? I have the billing sheet and the sheet that decodes it that sheet goes to column 73. I have a 2 is column 74 but do not know what that is.

Where would the part number be on the gearbox?

I just had a guy respond to me on another forum and he just had his 68 rebuild. It was the same casting number and same turn ratio as mine.

how close is your date code? even if that box didn't come in your car it may have been dealer installed back in the day which is almost as good. thats a nice fast ratio box.

Apparently the Pitman arms are different from vari ratio and non as well. You should be able to find that PN a little easier. I think it's right on the arm.

My pitman arm looks like 9789158b. GMT4

The gear box has 5691676. Then an 11 under it and 28 to the right.

Under side has x6.

Don't know if any of these is related to a date code.

date code is on the top aluminum cover on a rectangular raised area. Three numbers a space and one number. example- 080-7 means the 80th day of 1967.

I don't know but I've not heard of a fast ratio box like this in 65, code is similar for a box I have for a 76 Grand prix.

Ok what should i do with the not original parts? Do I just compare prices differences between rebuild and replace and then choose best price or should i always choose rebuild over replace on these parts?

I understand that if my part is the original one, then I should always rebuild it if it can be done.

My delima, As far as i know, the only thing wrong is a leaky rear seal on the steering gear box, should I have the seal replaced or rebuild or replace the unit.

My thinking is to rebuild or replace it due to the fact what it would take to get back to it to replace it later after the car is together.

same with my brake booster. It seems fine but ugly and would like to have it plated. It does not appear to be the original, so do I just replace it or send it in for a rebuilt and plated?

To many decisions.......

Is it possible this is the original?
