I have been to every parts store in town. Every time they pull up my make and model they try and sell me a 168 tooth flywheel, instead of one w/ 166 teeth. I am converting from an Auto to a Manual and the flywheel and starter are the last thing I need. My motor is a '73 pontiac 400 with a slightly upgraded cam, aluminum intake, and a Holley 4-barrel as the only real upgrades... So, I don't need a $400+ flywheel. The guy at NAPA told me I should try the 168 tooth flywheel his computer suggested and a regular starter set up for a 168 tooth flywheel. Will that work??? I figured I would ask the experts before I handed over the money and then had to deal with returning the parts when they don't work.
I also know that Ames carries the parts I need, but I would like to get out a little cheaper if I can. And it would be very frustrating to order from Ames and realize it is virtually the same stuff I could have gotten at any parts store.
Thanks blackbird! That price is a bit better than the price listed in the Ames catalog.
Does anyone know if the 168 tooth Chevy stuff is compatible?
I would think that it is compatible, because it doesn't make sense to stop producing flywheels for a sizable market of Buick, Olds, and Pontiac owners... unless there is a cheap and easy alternative...
Yours will be a 2.75" bore. Most have an 11" and a 10.4" clutch bolt pattern now. I bought and returned three a few years back untill I realised the kid behind the counter most likely didn't even know what a flywheel was. It's just all what comes up on the computer and the suppliers think Chev and Pontiac are one and the same. Not his fault, just doesn't know. You may have to go to a Pontiac performance vendor to get one. Or try a GM dealer.
