I seen the head number after zooming in on it as 47 so I'm sticking with my guess as a 69 350 , I was looking for one of those for one of my cars a few years back dated the 3rd week of jan,

Go here: http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/page2.htmThe block casting code will be on the block below the rear of the passenger side head. You need the block casting code and the 2 letter code, in your case XB, to identify the engine properly.

I didnt see any number by the distributer? But either way its not a pontiac 400? Don't feel too bad, I've been searching for this mystical number for a while as well.... My block is an XS and I was told it was out of a GTO Ram Air.... but I just found a number, below distributor on a horizontal surface and obscured by the transmission dipstick, the partial I can see is x300667 which I havent found in the listings.... other than that there is a "2" a few inches to the left.

It's not mysterious. Find the casting number (not near the distributor except up through early 67 castings) and the two letter code and go to the link I posted above. If you want to continue to be mystified, go right ahead.

Since many years used the same 2 letter code, this is the way to verify the year and type of block.

Thanks guys for the advice and pic.... the block is painted black, so difficult to read anything without a lot of light. The date code looks to be D056 or D058. The teufert site lists a block code of 500557 (I thought I was seeing 300667) for late 1976. This site doesn't have an XS for '76, but at www.wallaceracing.com/engine.htm I found an XS engine code for late 1976 (170hp yay!!). The www.spottsperformance.com/engineid.htm page identifies 500557 as a 400 Service Replacement engine. So I'm now assuming I have a 76 engine in my 67 bird. (As a guide to others, the block number is visible on the passenger side through the gap between rear of hood and firewall.... the date code at the back of the block is best seen from the driver's side.... both are on horizontal surfaces.)
