I just get the brakes working after two years and now this! Yesterday I went to the store and parked. When I came out and went to start my car it turned over for a fraction of a second, then nothing at all. No power to anything. No lights, no radio, no power top, nothing, dead! I wiggle tested the battery cables, the bulkhead block, under the dash, whatever I could think of. Nothing. Then I pull the harness that goes down to the starter because thats where the power comes from and I get power back, start the car and go home. Today I start the car and pull out of the garage then clean and tighten the battery connection and tighten the starter wires. When I go to start it, it does not turn over and I have power in the dash. When I turn the key back to acc. the gen light comes on, when I turn it forward to run, no gen light or any other light comes on and I think it should. When I turn the key to the starting position nothing happens except the temp light lights up when the starter should be on. Any help on where to start looking for the problem? Thanks Pete
Oh, another strange thing, when I was at the store and got power back the door buzzer started working, somthing that had not worked since I have owned this car. Now it still works but only when the key is turned back to acc. ??? Pete
It is usually the steering collar on the steering column. Turn the collar a couple of inches till lock. Then it will engage and allow you to start the car. It's just not engaging all the way over.
(It's the collar that moves when you shift the floor shifter)
this problem indicates that the linkage is not just right yet. It is very finicky as you've experienced.
Hi,thanks for the response. I am pretty sure it's not the batt because the car power comes from the same terminal on the starter and that works. Now the collar on the steering wheel... my car is a 4 speed does it still have that collar switch. And I know it has a neutral safety switch, where is it located? Somewhere around the clutch? When the car was operating properly you had to depress the clutch for it to turn over. Also, is there a way to test the solenoid. Thanks Pete
Had similar problem on my '68. Banshee nailed it. Loose cable at the starter. It had been loose long enough to erode/burn the terminal on the end of the cable. A real Biotch to get too with the long branch exhuast manifold in the way.

Dohhh. Seems I broke a terminal on the solenoid when I tightened it and accidently unplugged the voltage regulator plug. So basically, I caused all my problems that I had after the incident at the store. Pete
Is this your first time causing new work on the FGF today, based on the work you did yesterday?
I think we ALL have caused much more work for ourselves than the car actually needs! For 20 years in military aviation, I lived by the " if it works don't mess with it" rule, and lived through it.
But a classic FGF......now WHO can help themselves from messing with things that in actuality are working just fine? Not me, my friend! :p
