For those of you FGF owners who are also current or ex-Mustang owners:

April 17, 1964 the "ponycar" was born at the World's Fair.

Besides - no Mustang, most likely no Firebird.

This one is #3 for me:

2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered.
2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it)
Old projects, gone but not forgotten:
1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it.
1980 Turbo Trans Am
1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto
1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed
1983 F-150 4x4, built 302

Owned four or five different '76 and '77 Cobra II's. Were miserable cars to work on. We called them "rustangs"... smile

A pony car can (and often is) a muscle car too.

My favorite Mustang is the 1969 Boss 429 Mustang. One of the very few "other makes" that I feel is as cool as a Firebird.

Well, they may have tanked the new 2015 model. The new styling appears to be very polarizing and sales of the "old" 2014 model have spiked in the past couple of months.

I am not a fan of it - I describe it as the "Fusion Fastback". My guess is that it will sell well in the rest of the world, but not be such a hit in the US.

pony cars can have muscle , but muscle cars are big engined larger cars , bigger than pony cars which based on its weight can out perform a muscle car

Bjorn, I agree, but over the decades the definition of a muscle car changed, mostly because as people realized the quickest and fastest cars of the 60's and 70's were actually pony cars (Mustangs, Firebirds, Camaros, Cudas, Challengers, etc), they simply lump all the pony cars and muscle cars together, and call them muscle cars.

You'd be hard pressed to find a book or article anywhere about muscle cars that doesn't half half of its content dedicated to Hemi Cudas and Challengers, 440+6 Cudas and Challengers, Trans Am's, ZL1 and COPO Camaros, Boss and Mach 1 Mustangs, etc.

The way I see it, our pony cars are greater than muscle cars (by definition), because our cars are pony AND muscle cars, whereas muscle cars (GTO's, Chevelles, etc) are simply muscle cars. smile

tend to agree with that...but I am a stickler on language.....just because people say :"he is bigger than me" more now , still doesnt make it right...to me , its still "he is bigger than I (am)..I still like the original definition....and Pony cars were better than the muscle cars....yes.

I remember back in the late 1980's, when the muscle car hobby seemed to be exploding, how Muscle Car Review (then called Guide To Muscle Cars) kept doing "50 Fastest" lists. The lists kept changing as they found more and more original road tests (no web back then to look things up, they had to find old magazines), and then they began to add in then-current Vipers and Corvettes to the list, which always appeared at the top. Purists screamed that those weren't muscle cars, they were sports cars, so the magazine removed them from their lists, or came up with alternate lists.

It became painfully evident that many of the 1960's and 1970's cars on their lists were Camaros, Cudas, Challengers, and Mustangs, so people began to write in (remember those days when people wrote letters?) stating that ALL pony cars should be removed, as they weren't muscle cars!

For some reason, GTO guys like to separate out the Firebird when discussing fast Pontiacs, and they actually use the term "Pony Car" as a derogatory term, as in, "That's JUST a pony car, that's NOT a muscle car." frown

Over the past 15 years or so on the web, I've gotten into it with many GTO elitists who seem to think the Firebird is an inferior car in every way, shape, and form. However, I think I've calmed many of those guys down by providing facts, and even though it deflates their egos a bit, they finally acknowledge that the Firebird was indeed equal to, if not better than, the GTO in all aspects....except legroom. wink
