I think they all do, but I bought mine from Ames Performance. Try Classic Industries out your way in SoCal. Or Original Parts Group.
I assume you need the one that goes thru the block?

No turbo 400, Not the pontiac 400. 69 Automatic equiped cars had a unique dipstick for the trans. Real pain in the rear to find as I am finding.

Think main diff is where they curve up between engine and cowl panel vs the A and B bodies. After not finding a 1st gen style, ended up get'n a Lokar flex tube model and mounted to cowl pnl. Since then got th400's out of a 68 GTO and 69 GP. Will ck how close they are 2nite.

Hi Eric, I have an extra dip stick but do not know if it's a 69 or not. How do I identify a 69 dipstick? Here are some pics: https://plus.google.com/photos/105908860...=CKHytZiVytvtPw

67-69 FB's are definitely different. Neither one I have is correct. May work, but?... 68 GTO looks like it mounts up higher and forward of back of block. Other looks about the same but even higher.

Thanks gus that isn't the correct one. I have a pic I just can't figure out how to post it.
Yea Region the tunnel is tight on a bird, ad A/C and it gets even tighter. Add Ram Air pans and its almost impossible. the tube looks like a snake on crack lol 3 years of production there has to be one or two somewhere.........

I guess I was lucky way back when, when I swapped my ST300 for a TH400. I do not know what the donor vehicle was but the dipstick tube worked, with a/c, even when I added the ram air pans. I can R&R the tube in the car. At some point I did manage to mess up the mounting tab and had to re-weld it but it worked originally. Here's a pic.

Banshee, can you email me at [email protected] ? I can't figure out how to post a pic of it to the thread. I have one saved on my computer. Quick, those work but are not the right one for the 67-69 birds. correct ones are much more crooked. Almost as crooked as a politician......

Does anyone have a picture for what would have come in their '68 Firebird TH400? I was able to pick up a '68 PX TH400 a few weeks ago, but it came out of a GTO and is without a dipstick.

Measuring from bottom to top, all measurements appx. The first leg is 4.5" in length then a bend then 8" then a bend 6" then 2.5" then 6"..Total length is 29". Mounting tab is 6" from the dipstick handle.

He's got a Trans Am that it would go with, my Firebird will be okay without it.

Thanks Woven. If I get a lead (and you know me I find some really odd and hard to find stuff) I will send it your way for sure. I need this ASAP. The engine is assembled as is the Transmission and ready to go into the car.

The transmission the dipstick tube is with is a 69 PX. The driving factor, or shall I say question raised during the last 2 PX transmissions I sold was "do you have the dipstick?".
I just pulled the trans and brought it down from parents house a few weeks ago. Honestly, I would much rather sell them both together. I understand it is a hard to find part and a strong selling point is the dipstick.
I called 3 well known Pontiac parts guys today to alleviate the matter and pass along your info.. None of them advertise or have a "business" selling parts inquiring about a Th400 dipstick asking if they had one. Each said no.
So...if I sell it, I'd rather the trans goes with..or at least get a decent price for it. Dipsticks aren't impossible to replace...just hard.

As I am constantly running into 69 T/A parts as well as RA IV amd RA III parts. Thanks to those who have sent me pics and emails. I really appreciate it. Back to the quest!

I didn't know PQ and PX codes were different dimensionally.
I would entertain selling the dipstick tube alone. It is nervewracking that people come over to buy a Th400 and decline a $250 trans because it doesn't have one. I just don't need another Th400 in my garage to trip over or run into.
Make me an offer on PM

Externally they are not different. It is pretty much like having a 2bl 400 and a ram air III 400 block. Look the same on the outside but internally they are different. Plus there is the codes on the blocks. A YW code 400 carries a far higher value then say a YT. PX is kinda the base turbo 400. While PQ is the super heavy duty version. As for the dipstick tub, I emailed you back with a offer yesterday, you could take the tranny for scrap and sell the dipstick to me and [censored] near be at the 250 price. Not saying you should scrap a good turbo 400 just saying you could do that and almost hit your 250 mark.

Yes...understand a PQ is ram air specific (3.90-4.33) same as a PX being application specific. When you said a PX doesn't fit your car, I was kinda scratching my head. I guess what was meant to be said was that a PX wouldn't be correct for your car.
I have 2 69 PX transmissions. The $250 one and the one I bought for $375 and in FAR better shape externally and internally. I just got this one back home from storage a few weeks ago and that's why I had to check first to see if I brought the dipstick.
If a guy offered you $4000 less for your car, would you sell your RA III car without the ram air pans as a condition for the decrease in his offer and sell the ram air pans to make up the difference?

Don't know the value...in fact, the last 69 dipstick I sold last year to a member here for $30 including shipping. That stick belonged to the not so nice appearing 69...and have not been able to get rid of since. Should have researched what fair market value. My bad.
I am sorry I even said anything. It wasn't until I thought about this that I should have just kept my mouth shut.
Trying to help someone with a part they need but also not realizing that now I will have 3 Th400's in my garage with no dipsticks and the reason 2 people passed on buying was because I didn't have one.
I apologize for not being clear or at least thinking of the totality of my actions. It is my fault for speaking without thinking and not taking the time to PM the interested party in private stating that I wanted to sell both together. For this, I apologize. I am not a junk collector nor a hoarder of parts as a resale business. I also have to look at how best to sell a transmission lurking in my garage for months (years) and again, I put the cart before the horse.
I humbly apologize for inconveniencing, upsetting or pissing anyone off.

I am not mad, first my car is a Trans Am and as such received the PQ tranny even with the 3.55 geared rearend. I have turned down many a PX tranny cause they are not correct. Second, Yes I have in fact sold stuff in individual parts. Honestly I do it frequently. Last thing I did it to was the Trans Am Hood I had. Hood went to one guy and another guy got the pans and the last guy got the scoops and tubes. I gave a total price and none of the guys wanted it as a package. worked out best for all of us. If you had a 69 PQ without a dipstick I'd be all over it. Lack of dipstick tube is not a deal breaker on a tranny for me. Case in point I got this tranny and it clearly has no dipstick. I would bet if you put a GTO dipstick in anyone of em I bet they sell. Heck few know there is a difference, and they do work, they just do not put the handle in the correct spot. Lastly I offered you $150 bucks shipped for the thing. I also know all the guys at PY, a couple of em have me scour the west coast looking for RA III and IV parts on a constant basis. One of em directly deposits money into my personal bank account to go buy cars parts and what not all over the state of California. All of em said you offered how much? Thats high for a tube just wait one will pop up. To which I responded I want my car running for Reno in August I promised my kid it would be ready. Not gonna try to save 50 bucks and disappoint my son. The offer still stands, I can't make you sell a part nor would I. It seems to me that if you sold the tube for 150 (5 times what you sold the last one for) you could still sell the tranny easy enough for 100 bucks and get your $250 total. trust me I sell my cores on Craigslist for that all the time. and sometimes they are long shafts! If you don't want to sell it thats fine. I am patient S.O.B. I started with a bare shell and currently have a rough yet fairly complete 69 T/A. I have a date in my head and if I don't get one by then, I will order a lokar and watch ebay and craigslist til one pops up. Once again I am not mad at all. you told me you had it I offered you what I felt was a fair price ( I am sure others will agree I didn't try and get it for free) and you declined. No big deal these things happen in the business world all the time. So it is on to the next deal. Someone will have it at some point and happily offer it me. If anyone else has one, the $150 offer shipped stands if I get it before the date I have in mind!

I didn't sell the last one for $30 I GAVE it to him knowing full well it was worth more. I owed him a favor...
You offered me $150 for it...I didn't set the price. As well, you use my ridiculously low price to further how "generous" you are and disrespect in the process.
If selling the trans is so easy to do...then buy mine with the tube and go for it. All I see here is someone willing to take the good [censored] and talk [censored] and leave the other person with the leftover crap.
Frankly, this isn't worth my time.

No where in that statement does it state you did it as a favor for a friend. Matter of fact it flat out states you should have researched fair market value first. So it doesn't sound like you were even doing as a friendly gesture. I simply used your sale price in comparison to mine to show I wasn't trying to get it for nothing. Bottom line is anyone else with one will now have some sort of guideline as to what at least I am willing to pay. Shipping a core turbo 400 Trans all the way to California seem like a both a waste of time and money. I offered what I felt was a fair price for a hard to find part. I am not trying to take the good stuff and leave the crap. I am trying to secure the part I need at a fair price. Your entitled to your opinion however, and they are your parts so you can do with them as you please. Personally I don't see how I "disrespected" you by illustrating using facts derived from your own comment that I felt I was not being either unfair nor was I trying to get it for free. But to each his own. You have made it very clear your not willing to sell the dipstick tube alone and that is fine. I wish you the best of luck with your sale. as I am sure someone with a 400 Firebird that needs a PX turbo 400 will be very happy and excited to pay your asking price. I however have no need for a Transmission so I will not be interested in it as a package. I do appreciate you taking the time to look and also sending a pic. If nothing else We have a very good reference for comparison thanks to your diligence and hard work.

News update! Picked one up today for basically free. Guy sold me a package deal of engines one of which was a 68 400/400 combo. Kept the trans for his gto gave me the dipstick for my car knowing full well what he had and why I needed it. I gave him a gto set up, didn't argue his price and bought a case of beer after we finished loading up the parts.
