Does anyone know of anybody that makes the Super 400 Hood anymore. The phone number for the guy in PA that originally made these does not work anymore. If not, and I know this might sound absolutely crazy, has anyone ever lowered the 400 engine in the subframe. Apparently you need 2" more clearance under the hood to accommodate an Edellbrock RPM intake. I've wondered if it is possible to lower the engine 1" and lower the front subframe 1" by using spacers to gain the 2". I understand that this would be quite complicated using spacers under the inner fenders and core support, but I have not even begun to think about steering clearance issues. I just really hate to have to cut a gaping hole in my hood or put an aftermarket cowl induction hood on. The 'ol Firechicken would end up looking like it's ugly red headed step sister (Camaro). That is out of the question.

Spotts Performance has a page about them but it says they are unavailable at this time. But I bet you they could tell you what the story is with them.

I have a RPM and n2o plate with a drop base air cleaner from Larry Navarro(on performance years). Not a lot of clearance from top of air horn to lid(think 3" tall filter-have to check), but does fit.

I'm going to end up making one for my car. I need clearance and no stock hood air filter Assemblies will work.

I have no clue what a super 400 hood is...
However.
Find a drop base air cleaner housing...a 3 or 4" filter element with a standard air cleaner cover will clear the hood. You can not use a stud/wing nut to secure the air cleaner.
It is cost prohibitive...even insane...to start mucking with engine height in order to utilize an air cleaner.
I had a stock hood..solid motor mounts..RPM intake..rochester carb. .had 1/2" clearance. .

I had to put in a drop base air cleaner. I was able to put in a stock height filter and no hood mods.
No way I would compromise my hood for an aftermarket part. IMO

At least give me a little cred. I still want it to look stock. I could just replace the quarters, front end, put a cowl induction hood on and call it a camaro. Lol

No way to drop the engine in the frame without re-configuring the cross member to clear the oil pan. If you're considering putting one of those hoods on, why are you even thinking about a stock looking car? It's one or the other. I say if it's stock...leave it that way. If it's not stock...then let the customizing begin and don't look back.

I, for one, appreciate your efforts to keep from "Camaro-izing" your Firebird.
