I have had a few 1st gen camaros but I have never a firebird. looking to buy a 68 firebird but don't know what this hole is. It is a square hole right above where the dist would be. Seller says "Ram air vent..inverted vent on cowl panel". can't get pic to post.

No factory cowl based carb air systems on Firebirds. Only early Chebby Z-28's had those. Until the photo gets posted, the only hole I know up that high that goes into the cowl area is for the WS wiper motor. Figure 12-11 here: Shows the upper cowl area and the round WS wiper hole. Here is mine. From that angle it looks like it may be the factory windshield motor hole but it looks more horizontal then mine. Also the firewall does not have some of the factory molds. Has it been replaced?

Homemade cowl induction system by a PO. Nicely finished off, but not original to the car.
Note that the factory WS motor hole is stamped into the upper cowl section, while that owner-installed hole punches through the factory seam between the upper cowl section and the firewall section.
The wiper motor is just outside the photo to the right. You can barely see one of the outside corners.

ok so not factory. the seller is telling me its supposed to be there. still might buy the car i will just have to repair the hole. def not a wiper motor hole .

also the cowl tag told me org color and all but did not mention any motor option. is that info in the vin? i used the fill in the blank cowl tag app on this site.

The VIN will only tell you if it was a 6cyl or a V8/ The important details have to come from the build sheet. If you do not have it, it can be obtained through http://www.phs-online.com/
