I want to change the transmission lines on my turbo 400 and am having trouble getting the pipe wrench on the fittings on the ends attaching to the transmission, when I do there isn't any room to turn it. There isn't much room in there, anyone have a suggestion on getting this done?
Mine, and I think a lot of people, have had the steel lines cut and replaced with rubber (fuel hose). Mine are cut just below were the firewall starts to curve back so you can reach that section over the fender, the steel lines run the rest of the way into the trans.
If you use hose, make sure to use the correct type. If you use vacuum line it will harden up and crack. I would try to get the lines tight at all means before adding rubber splices.
Don't help with installation, but whenever replacing lines like brake and trans, etc, just cut the pipe as close to the fitting as possible. Then use a socket/wrench to remove fitting. From memory only get about a 1/4 turn at a time at the trans w/a line wrench. Have to be patient. Remove lower 1st, then upper. Reverse to install.
Either try Crows feet, stubby wrenches, or a flare wrench. I know I installed mine in the car.
X2. Proper flare nut wrenches for sure.
