Finally getting around to changing coil springs and wondered if anyone ever followed the steps in the service manual? Basically they tell you to remove the stabilizer end link and then jack down the lower control arm by removing the bolts at the frame. I have always separated at ball joints but since all that stuff is new this intrigued me. Anyone ever tried or think its a bad idea? I am going to use an internal spring compressor either way. Thanks in advance for advice.
There are a bunch of old threads on spring r&r if u came find them. Spring compressors don't work well for a variety of reasons. If you get some good quality 5/8 threaded rod (McMaster Carr grade 5) and two sturdy plates or angle drilled for 5/8, it makes a great compressor. Run it through the upper shock hole and put the plate on the bottom side of the control arm. For easy removal, leave everything assembled, including the shocks, and cut several coils with a grinder (assuming replacing springs)
Yes, you remove the bolts connecting the lower arm to the frame then lower the arm until all the pressure is off the spring. I put a chain around the spring first just in case. As Bob says, a length of redi-rod through the arm, spring and frame at the spring pocket can compress for re-install. All other cars I've changed springs on were done by splitting the ball joint, but these work better if you remove the control arm mounting bolts.
