Digging into why my coolant temp sometimes exceeds 240F in stop-n-go traffic. For now, Im assuming the after market gauge is close enough to be accurate. Radiator was a bit low. Flushed and filled entire cooling system. All seems good but have yet to find stop-n-go traffic. Temp = 180-200F in 30 - 60 mph moving traffic.
I found an electric fan in front of rad. Doesn't seem to work automatically or find a switch for it. I am electrically challenged at times, so please be nice(smile). Ohm meter on fan shows zero ohms, fan should be ok...correct? 2 wires from fan. One goes to batt ground, wire ohms at zero. One goes to fuse box inside firewall, 3rd spade from top. I get no power here. Is this spade powered via ignition key? This wire ohms at zero also.
Rigged up some 12ga wire, fan does move when connected directly to battery.
Stick with the factory clutch fan. A few of us firebird owners in AZ are using the Hayden heavy duty fan clutch and factory fan shroud an a 4 row radiator. 2 guys have a champion aluminum radiator that fits perfectly. Water Temps never go over 190 here. Providing you have the proper water pump impeller clearances to the divider plate and a functioning thermostat you should have no problems keeping your bird cool. I wouldn't wire any electric fans to the factory wiring or fuse box it's a good way to set your bird on fire. Correct way is to use a relay and wire directly to the battery and use a toggle switch to switch the relay. Electric fans can pull more amperage than the factory wiring was designed for and melt the wires.
Just my thought... The PO used this as a bandaid for a tempurature problem somewhere in the system, then ran into another issue. In all my years, I've never had an overheat unless there was something wrong. Had plans to remove the e-fan.
Thanks for the wire/fuse box info. Makes sense.
Why do I expect more surprises with this car(grin)?
I wired 2 electric fans in my car.. they worked great at idle... but driving was a different story... I went back to the flex fan for now and I'm looking to put the original fan back in...I was actually thinking about putting the fans on the other side and using both but getting ready to rethink that...
I yanked my electric fan off the front from the previous owner, and instantly saw 10-20 degree difference. I've read a TON of threads on here about temp issues, and about 90% are due to what BigChief mentions. Usually something wrong with the water pump or impeller clearances.
I just rewired my entire car, and found a LOT of stupid stuff, and a bunch of melted wires. If the electric fan is running through the fuse block, take it out, put it on it's own circuit per Chief's advice. There's nothing worse than a dash fire (yup, happened..).
Oh.. and congrats on the purchase!
