I installed the correct hood insulation pad and clips on my 350 2bbl Coupe. The insulation pad rubs the paint off the air cleaner. It is the original air cleaner cover. Any thoughts on how to prevent it? I'll send some pix tonight.

There should be at least a couple of inches of clearance. And you sure you have the correct air cleaner?

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

I think so. Here's a picture when I was just starting to put it all back together.

Hmmm. Looks correct. Stock carb? Its really hard to tell from the angle of the picture, but it just looks like the air cleaner assembly is sitting higher than it should. Nothing else is jumping out at me.

New one on me too. A few things you might look at:
Is the air cleaner stud poking a hole in the insulation or getting close enough to scratch the underside of the hood?
Is there a carb spacer under the carb?
A thick gasket under the air cleaner?
Do you have all the clips on the underhood insulation?
Was it a correct molded insulation piece or no?
Are the motor mounts correct and installed properly?

Please post up a couple more pics. Of the underhood insulation, of the air cleaner assy from the front about level with the radiator core support.

The vent tube would be all wonky if the air cleaner was too high...looks like it is seated in the valve cover correctly.

Probably a wrong hood insulator.

Dr. D, you're probably right with the insulation. It's not the form fitting. It's supposedly the same as OEM but not the molded. Here are some pix.

So, now that we know the problem, thoughts on a way to prevent it from rubbing the paint off?

Cut a hole in the padding so it fits over the air cleaner -OR- get an aftermarket chrome drop base air cleaner with a 2 inch filter for running around town, keep the stock one for shows. -OR- get the correct insulation or just take it off.

Stud is too long, cut it about 1/2" above the wing nut.

Correct insulation will work.

I found another problem that helps, but the insulation still touches the cover. The air filter element was incorrect. I had a 4 bbl element, 3" high, that didn't sit in the bottom of the unit so the cover was not down tight, about a half inch too high. The 2 bbl air filter is 8" in diameter and 2.5" high and sits in the upper part of the cleaner. The cover is touching the lower part of the cleaner and the top of the filter.
