Does anyone know the space available between stock aircleaner height and bottom of hood for a 68 firebird? Looking to change intake manifold that will increase carb height. My car is taken apart so no way to reference existing height. Ive gotten new manifolds for other cars that suggest a clay trick in the instrucitons. Make a column of clay on top of the aircleaner lid and close the hood. Clay will get depressed. Open hood and measure height of crushed clay column.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im guessing no difference between 400 and 350 hood. But just in case....Mine is a 400.
thanks for reply. Any idea how uch room you have left? Looks like torker II is .4 inches higher than stock plus your half inch spacer is just inder an inch. RPM manifold is 1.25 inches taller than stock. A littel over a quarter inch taller than yours.
Not exactly sure, but I have a drop base chrome air cleaner (open) I used with a 3" K & N filter element that fit fine with hood insulation. Use a 2" element and that gives you another inch.
FYI, aforementioned air cleaner and filter are for sale.
You have to be careful getting the top too close to the carb opening. You could end up choking off the air flow. Not so much a concern on a stock engine but something bigger requires more air in. Just something to be aware of.
What intake manifold are you going to use? I have a performer rpm which is 1-1/4" taller than stock. Rather than the clay I used some tin foil to determine the clearance, not that I prefer the tin foil but had no clay on hand, I use a drop base filter housing and it works OK. I don't know if it impedes airflow compared to a stock unit or not.
