Im trying to figure out what the correct color and code the regular spare wheel should be on my 68 firebird. I have read that the space saver should be a grey color.I assume mine is a regular and not a space save because of sticker. when I bought the car it came with 5 steel wheels (not on the car) 4 black wheels code - HG GM65 1 grey wheel
one of the black wheels is being used as a spare. thats the way i got it 2 years ago. it looks like its been back there for many years because the wheel is in great condition.
should my regular spare be black ?
or is my grey wheel the spare ?
are the black wheels correct for that year ?
sorry for the long confusing post. im trying to get my car back to original.
HG next to the valve stem is correct for standard 14x6 steel wheels.
Unless your trunk pan has been replaced, your car came with a space saver spare due to the location of the tie-down for the hook.
I would say someone threw in a standard wheel-spare in your car at some point.
The four wheels for the car would have been black. I have never seen a TX wheel. No idea what that is from.
I guess it is possible that the TX (grey) wheel was a spare, but I doubt its from your car as your car should have a space saver. Do you have the PHS on your car to confirm? Might be another unusual factory oddity.
What sticker is on the underside of your trunk lid? does it show full size, or space saver?
Oh, and you definitely have the correct jack. Hold on to that as they are impossible to find. The jack handle should be slid in between the rubber sleeve and the shaft, not inside the shaft like you have it now. The sleeve is there to hold them together and keep them from rattling.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Based on the location of the trunk bracket, I suspect your car came with a SpaceSaver. I believe the full size option was mounted down on the floor of the trunk. If you have the PHS documentation, it will show if the no-cost full size option was ordered or not. Is there a sticker under the trunk lid?
thanks for the info. the old sticker was peeling but showed regular spare(I think), I have since put on a new sticker. I will try to take off the new sticker and see if can get a pic of the old sticker.
location of welded hook for spare tells the story...ion botton its regular size, space saver would go on the slant...BUT, someone could have (as I did) changed the trunk pan, and replaced hook for space saver and used....to....save space....sticker would most likely be correct unl;ess sone one (like I did) replaced it too....
That sticker looks like space saver tire to me and the bracket location is for space saver. So based on that it should be space saver unless you get the phs to prove a full size wheel was special ordered.
Did all cars come with a spare? The only option was full size( free) or space saver( extra)? I never had a spare so, just curious. Could you get a spare rally as well as your full size option?

In '68 the SpaceSaver was standard. The conventional spare was a no cost option (702). The sales manual says the conventional "Matches Road Tires". Don't know if that implies the wheel matches or not.
so this HG wheel is the correct conventional spare ?
Not sure, but that would be a good educated guess. They do not repop the standard spare trunk sticker for a 'vert. Never checked for a coupe one. Here is a picture of my original:

They do make a repop for the standard spare coupe. I noticed your sticker does not have the marker lights in the illustration. My old 68 sticker does not show marker lights either. The 67's stickers illustrate it without marker lights and the 68's illustrate it with marker lights. Did the early production 68's get the 67's sticker?

I never noticed that. Good eye! This car is a third week of July 1968 build, so they don't get any later than that. In fact, I think this is one of the very LAST 1968's ever built. I read in a couple of places that production ceased in the second week of July.
I'll have to look at the stickers on my other '68's. But those all have space savers.
I'll have to guess all '68's came without the marker light illustrations. Or maybe for only the optional standard spare, because so few were produced that way, maybe they didn't bother with new stickers.

So likely due to seldom used full size spare and sticker.
I know the lid is original to the car as the paint was all original when I bought the car.
Anyone else have a '68 'vert with full size spare and a readable jack sticker?
