I'd like advice about purchasing an original look spare throttle cable for my '68 400 HO w/Quadrajet. I've heard of two owners who have had theirs fail so I want to have one in the trunk in case my old original breaks. Has anyone used the Ames FN377? https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/Detail_Web?part_num=FN377&order_number_e=NDMyMDY2Ng%3D%3D%0A&web_access=Y Ames advertises it as 19.75" long. Here on the FAQs, someone's research posted the original gm part 9792224 was 18". http://firstgenfirebird.org/f-a-q/firebird-throttle-cables-1968-1969/

Jim, I am about 99.5% sure that is the same one I replaced two years ago when mine broke. Fit and worked well without screwing around.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. X2, I put one on last summer, fits and works correctly. The only measurement that matters is from where the cable clamps to the F4 bracket and goes to the carb linkage.

I've used this cable and it worked well. However I could not fully open the throttle. It needed just a little shorter cable. But I believe it was due to the carpet, sound deadener and\ or carpet padding not allowing the gas pedal to go all the way down.
So what I did was at the gas peddle where the throttle cable slips through, I put a small lead slip sinker on the end of the throttle cable just to take up a little space and make it a 1/16 shorter or so and that allowed the carb to open fully.
Just check after installing it and make sure the carb opens at 90 degrees.

Jim, can you take a photo of the "connector" that came with that one (connection to carb link)?

Being a part I've seen fail during use, I keep this one as a spare in the trunk. I believe the tube on the end is black on my original but otherwise they look alike.

Thanks my friend. I replaced my original (frayed cable connection at carb linkage) a few years ago and had to modify the hardware link at the throttle assembly. Its holding up well so far. Man, that was a pain getting the wire cable through the guide tube under the dash, but I got it done. I think its a great idea to have a spare stored in the trunk just in case. AND you have to have very sharp and strong wire cutters to keep the newly cut cable end from fraying. The manufacturer recommended tight electric tape wrapped around the cable prior to cutting, and that was darn good advice.

The new cable is complete with connectors on both ends. It should not need any cutting.

I bought a few cables from different distributors. All came back exactly the same. They must all be getting from the same supplier. None opened the carb fully. Had to cut down the plastic housing to allow more movement by the gas peddle as well as shorten the cable. Works fine now but definitely not right out of the box.
