Hi, Looking for some advice. I recently rebuilt my 400 engine to put in my 67 FB Vert. It was originally from a 70 to 72 Grand Prix from what I was told. I bought Ram Air Restoration long branch headers. They suggested that I buy the heavy duty flanges from them as well as the oil filter adapter. I did that and I can't get the oil filter on because it hits the headers. I called and they said I needed a 90 Degree filter housing. I bought one rebuilt from Butler Performance. I still have the same problem. The filter is hitting the flange. I even tried a smaller filter. Any ideas?? Anyone experience this before? Please let me know. Thanks in advance Mike

There are two different oil filter brackets. One is 90 deg and one tilts inward. You need the one that doesn't tilt inward. It's the original first gen firebird bracket. Supposedly big poncho too. Tempest/GTO got the tilt inward bracket. The repro ones are prob the tilt in one for GTO's
Just curious. Does the filter need to be shorter, or a smaller diameter, in order to clear the exhaust ? There are some small filters, for 301's & LS engines that many have used, to solve clearance problems. These are only about 3" in diameter, and come in several lengths, beginning at about 3.4".
The WIX 51042 & NAPA 1042 is one of the short ones.

I have not got around to tackling this on my car yet either- just running a smaller filter until I get some time. My mount must be incorrect. Do you happen to have a link for one that tilts outward or pics of both?

There was a similar question back three years. Maybe it will help??? See: https://firstgenfirebird.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=292407&Searchpage=3&Main=34576&Words=%2Badapter&Search=true#Post292407
I use the standard 'larger version' of oil filter with my LBM's. Is it tough to get in there, yes. But it fits.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Thanks for the info guys. tinindian6702, didn't mean to jump on your thread, just hoping to solve an issue as well.
I do have the correct angled bracket on mine, ordered from Ramair resto. For some reason, the bigger filter will fit, but it stays in contact with the LBM'S when fully threaded on. I either have to dent the filter (which I don't want to do) or use a smaller one that clears.
Mike, I did see a thread where a guy took his oil filter bracket off and slotted the mounting holes just enough to get more of a tilt away from the LBM'S and it worked pretty good. You might try that. It's on my to do list for this winter.

Your lives would be much easier if you would just listen to me on this one. The repop oil filter housings (the thing you screw the filter onto) are for GTOs and are wrong for FGF's and will not work with the long branch adapter. I give up. You are on your own.
