My 2 speed needs to be pulled and gone thru. The car sat way to long and it leaks fluid everywhere when you fill it up. I thought since I had to pull it perhaps I should go for a 350 tranny. From what I read here, they are an exact swap.
The donor tranny I want to buy was taken out of a 1976 Buick Regal V-6 with 58,000 miles that was wrecked. It's been sittingin a garage since about 1990. Seller says It worked perfectly when removed, but like mibne it would need to be resealed because it's been sitting so long.
How can I be sure this tranny would fit? Maybe it won't? Would I use the same torque converter? Does anything need to be done to the t converter before I put the transmission in? Any thoughts or tips on this?
Thank you in advance for any help. I have never worked on an automatic transmission.
It should work, IF... you can take some measurements.. over all length etc... but a BOP TH350, should be a pretty direct swap.
Hey, if you get to that point and need a hand, let me know. If I can get away, I'll gladly give you a hand with it! (give me some lead time if possible as to when you plan the swap)
The seals should be easy once it's out and accessable (front and tail seals) The Torque converter... well? you may want to get a new one as you'll produce a little more torque in a different range than the stock V6... and that one may mount to the flywheel differently? I'd get a new one just to be safe. You can get one from Jegs/Summit pretty cheap...
Keep me posted!

I swapped mine. I used the ST-300 torque converter for now. It's working. Keep in mind you'll have to convert to a cable kickdown rather than electric. I bought a Lokar kickdown cable from Summit. BOP bolt pattern and tailshaft length are all you need to be concerned about as long as it is not a lock-up torque converter. I don't think they were in 1976. I used the speedometer gear out of the ST-300. I had to modify the TH-350 shift cable bracket to put the cable in the right position. If you get into it and have questions feel free to PM. One thing is for sure, you're going to love how it drives with just one more gear!
Hey guys! Hi Bret! YEs it is me! Been busy working on the boat trying to find time for the firebird. The guy from craigs still has that buck 350 tranny. I guess I may just go for it. Hopefully it would be good to go with a front seal and pan. Sounds like a pretty direct swap. Brett I think my engine might be a 455 The engine code starts with YE. I have looked online & it appears to be a 455. I think 71 they started with the 455 and YE code. When I had the water pump off. There was no vin on the front block & I saw some marker writing on the front pulley like they do in wrecking yard. Could not make it out. But I have determined that the belated previous owner replaced the motor. Hopefully I will confirm what it is sooN!. I rebuilt the carb. Runs much better. NOw I need to get this tranny issue resolved so I can at least drive it while I am fixing it up to my liking. Thanks for the feedback!
I looked really hard. I think I would have to raise the car. Can not seem to see under the exhaust manifold. I did write these #'s down for what they are worth. Front of engine 032494 YE Casted next to the distributor 86 /33 under that is casted H298 The heads have 143 casted.
