I had a very reputable shop put new carpet in my 69 Firebird TH400. I figured they would do a better job than I could. Carpet looks great but now the car won't come out of park unless I manhandle it. I don't think there button on the top of the shifter knob is depressing properly. Any one solve such a problem before? Can anyone tell me how to get the shifter knob off and reinstall it? Thanks!
I hope they didn't break something. I just looked at mine. You can pull the button out. Just yank it upward. Then you will see a metal rod sticking up. Try to push that down. That is what has to be pushed down to take it out of park. To take the knob off you first take out the snap ring from down inside the knob from the top.
To remove automatic knob: 1: Remove tiny cir-clip from bottom of knob. 2: Slide knob down to reach the top cir-clip. 3: Lift off bird button and remove top cir-clip. 4: slide knob off of chrome shaft. 5: Use new cir-clips when reinstalling (they are 1/4").
You might check if your gear selector plate is firmly attached to console. The hold-down clips break when it is pulled away from console unless removed properly.
