It was 30 years ago today that I bought my last Firebird, the 1968 convertible 350 with a 2 spd column shifted auto. Back then I put on a 4bbl carb, headers, 1.25" antisway bar, 70's Trans Am steering box, disc brakes, Super T-10 4 speed, new top, carpets, paint, wheels and tires and a whole lot more little stuff. It was a nice car. I will have to go through my photo albums and try to find some pics of it back then and post them here.
Today she is up on the hoist and I am doing a very much more thorough restoration as you may have read here in the past month. All new floors, trunk, all welded metal repair where needed, no chop strand this time around, it's coming together nicely. Still need to repair the rear quarters and go through the engine, swap in a 3.23 posi rear end and a few other things, then a nice summer road trip with my son later this year.
It's been a fun project and each day is a new adventure.
Pictured below is the ad from the Auto-Trader in Vancouver, and the receipt for the car. In my file I have all the paperwork for the last 33 years, it was brought into Canada in 1987 from California, I bought it in 1990. I tried contacting the man I bought it from to tell him about the restoration but sadly he passed in 2005.
Well that's pretty cool. 30 years and still like it enough to put that much work into. I've owned my truck for 32 and my Harley for 41 years, I'm about ready for a change with them both.
I thought I was reading about my firebird! Pretty much the same story. Thirty years ago, was a column shifted automatic - now manual, been working on it ever since. Every year more up-grades. You must enjoy working on it. Have fun!
Well it hasn't always been the love of my life, I had a son and a '68 GTO in there and the Bird took the back seat for about 15 years and pretty much sat outside unloved for that period but it now is being restored and I will keep it in a garage and it should last another 50 years, way longer than me.
Cant wait for summer... 68HO4004spvert Sleddog Iowa
