Finally got the new posi diff in the car. Also new springs, new axel bearings, all new bushings and spring pads, new brake drums and new hardware, plus refurbished the period correct Lakewood traction bars. Been planning this since before I had kids. (Oldest now getting married) LOL. Went 3:36 with Auburn carrier, and will use a wide ratio Muncie. The Muncie’s 2.52 first Xs the 3:36 should provide a pretty decent take off gear and the 3:36 overall will allow comfortable highway driving. Looking forward to a springtime cruise. Photos below:
I just got done putting this 67 rear together. I went with an auburn posi and used some 3.55 gears I had from my GTO rear. There’s a 69 rear in my bird now. I wanted to go back to the 67 rear setup with the traction bars

What springs are you going to use?

Was planning on original style monoleafs from Detroit Eaton
I just purchased a very original 400 conv. that the previous owner replaced the mono leafs with multi leafs and U bolts. They bent the brake lines up to get the ubolts over the axle. I wish he wouldn’t have touched it. I think I am going to put the original monoleafs back on and sell the multileafs.

My 67 is currently cobbed together with a 69 rear with multileafs. It came with slapper bars in place of the lower plates. They were hideous so I took them off and had to use 67 lower plates so I could attach the non staggered shocks. Looking forward to returning it to the stock 67 setup
Looks good. Just make sure you flip the bottom return spring on your brakes or your self adjusting system will not work. That is a common thing for people unfamiliar with drum brakes to get wrong.

Good eye barnbird. In my experience self adjusting brakes never seem to adjust to my satisfaction. With the spring in that position they have no chance.

I've just picked up a 68 ZM with 3.36 I intend to use it behind a TH400 the service manual does not list it for use with auto, what problems would I come across if use this with auto?
the service manual also list that ZB with 2.56 only for 2 speed auto but my 68 400HO came with TH400 and 2.56 rear anyone able to shed some light on this

The "68 Service Manual is wrong. I dug into this many years ago because my '68 400HO with TH400 (PY) trans with AC also came from the factory with a ZB code 2.56 Safe-T-track. Note that the Parts book has a completely different code and that is also wrong.
Your 68 was pretty much like mine. mine was ordered in the UK and can understand the need for the 2.56 with gas prices more than double than the US and Canada
So I should have no issues running 3.36s then?
Its a late 68 casting but its all i can find at the moment.. I would like to find a ZB then I can switch out for any long distance drives
That is a nice heavy duty 4 Pinion unit, great score. http://www.wallaceracing.com/axledata2.htm Also as Jim said she will rev a little higher at freeway speeds but the best part is she will have a lot better throttle response everywhere, gas mileage be dammed.
