What is the proper location for the head bolts with the studs? I'm putting together a motor and the set of head bolts has 2 short ones with studs and 2 long ones with studs. I think the 2 short ones go on the driver side for the heat shroud. Do the long ones have something to do with AC brackets on the passenger side? I don't have AC.
You are right about the 2 for the heat shield, My 68 has a/c and from what I can tell has never been apart. My motor has only one other studded head bolt. It is the second bolt in on the passenger side and is one of the bolts holding on the main a/c bracket and the stud is used for the negative battery cable. As far as a fourth mine does not have one. I know motors slated for different body styles and years had different setups from the motors I have disassembled through the years are you dealing with a 68 firebird motor and bolts? The only other thing I can think of is the motors that came with the rocker baffles or as some people call them oil drippers I think they were held on with studded head bolts.
Crap, I forgot the battery is on the passenger side. I put the stud for that on the drivers side. Everything is torqued. I'm used to working on goats. I'll have to swap bolts. I really hate to do that after torqueing.
I hate when that happens. If they were aluminum heads I would say back away but luckily our old heavy cast iron parts are very forgiving. Although not ideal I'm sure it will be fine.
