Started my "68 up today after sitting for 3 weeks. Ran great last time started. It starts, but is idling rough and intermittently "banging" and back firing. It eventually will stop running, but can be started back up. When I started it 3 weeks ago, I checked the timing. 9 degrees at idle and 35 degrees at WOT. I did not change anything. Spark plug wires are not loose and have not been burned through to cause it to short. Distributor is tightened down, ie won't turn.

Any ideas?

Bad fuel

Is the carb flooding over or is the choke stuck closed?

Has the original nylon-coated timing gear and chain ever been replaced? Could the chain have skipped a gear tooth or two?

Thanks for the suggestion, that something I never would have considered. I think the fuel is ok, but I'll keep that in mind as i troubleshoot.

I let it sit for a day, and will try again today. The choke looks ok.

I am the 5th owner and to be honest have never looked at the timing chain or know if it's ever been replaced.

I'll take a look to see if I can figure that out.
