There are 5 cocktail shakers on Ebay right now for 69 Firebird, (each listed for sale separately)is anyone able to identify which one of the 4 or 5 posts is the right front? Here's one of the posts # 4597701186. Thanks for the help.

Dave,

It's hard to tell from the pictures. The first question I would ask the seller is if these came off a '69 Firebird or Camaro. They are not the same - at least not the front ones. If he verifies they came off a '69 Firebird, and you need one, then start looking closely at them to see which one you need. I have the left front out of my car now if you need a picture. Send me a PM with your email address.

Hmmmmmmm. It looks like one and two are from a Firebird or Camaro and they are the back ones. Now, 3-5 look like they came from the same car BUT I don't think they are Camaro or Firebird. Number 3 is a back one from a different body style car. So, if 3-5 are from the same car and 3 is not an f body then 4 and 5 are very questionable. I would guess 4 is the closest to what you want. Without some extra pictures that auction is troubling.

Cocktail shakers were also put into Corvairs. Check out some Corvair part sites to see if they have pictures for reference.

I met a guy with a beautiful Corvair convert at our local cruise night. I went around to look at the vibration dampeners and he asked me if I knew what they were. He had purchased the car a few months earlier and had not yet figured out what they were for.

Actually Bjorn, that might be more believable than saying engineers would add 120 pounds of oil, springs, and metal balls in big tincans to a car. laugh

Hi Clay I live in St. Albert just outside Edmonton. I have a 67 326 vert. What is yours? They are just that. Vibration dampeners. You will find them in all ragtop verts. The theory is they help with vibration that would otherwise be softened by a hard top. Does that sound right fellow FGF members? Anyway get back to me Clay and lets talk ragtops.

They were installed at the factory , but many have disappeared during the years, people have removed them to
A) reduce weight
B) forgot to install after crash repairs etc

so therefor many cars are missing them , mostly missing in the rear where they were easier to remove...but cars should have them in ea corner...
several owners have reported no problems with them missing...
I cannot verify the 'no problem',since my car has them .

They stiffen up the car somewhat too. They connect the trunk pan to the quarters. They reinforce the front fenders and add attachment points to the radiator support. The added weight in the corners should help slightly with body roll.

As I was joking about above, they are supposed to contain springs top and bottom with an iron weight in between. The can is filled with oil (like trans fluid). Vibrations in the vehicle cause the weight to move up and down between the springs in the can and then holes in the weight allow the fluid to regulate the speed at which it can move. That weight movement and its dampening must counter vibrations in the car body.

Sounds like voodoo magic to me! :-)
Good to know though, I'm going to have to check if I have these things...

Hey Jimbo - good to see a (somewhat) local on here! I'll send you a pm...

Dave:
They are all the same, that means size and weight.
But the brackets makes all of them different, none of them fits right in other places than they originally were meant to go.
That makes for a lot of confusion and a lot of hunting for the exact right ones for you car and for every corner.
As I´ve stated before, it is not hard at all to make or alter the brackets to fit in either place, and the front ones will never show anyway. JMO

I've always heard speculation on what's inside a shaker but has anyone actually opened up a shaker to see what's inside? I'm curious.
