Has any one here ever put a pontiac tri-power
3 X 2 intake on a 1967-69 pontiac firebird engine? If so did you have enough clearance to close hood?

I forwarded this to a friend in Austin that has a tri power in his 68 bird...this is the response I got

"The height of the air cleaner is the same as a qjet. so no there is no clearance problem at all....

Kevin"

I haven't put my tri-power on my engine yet, but my timing chain/water pump has an indent for the water neck to clear. My engine is a 428; I don't know if the cover is different than the 350/400.

asked:" do you know if he had problems with water outlet on front of the intake hitting timing chain cover?"
and got this back
no, you have to use the correct filler neck. LOL...
I`ll ask back "whats the correct one"?

I asked:""whats the correct one"?

and his answer is:" 9179580 is the casting number for the water neck on the tri power intake. You can actually get it at NAPA "

hopefully this is what you need!
wink

The number on mine is 9779073. It has a flat spot at the point where the cover would come in contact.

I'VE BEEN RUNNING A TRI-POWER ON MINE FOR YEARS.
FIRST ON THE 400 ('67 ENGINE) NOW ON THE 428 ('69 ENGINE). IT CLEARS THE HOOD FINE.
AS FOR THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING...WITH MY OLD TIMING CHAIM COVER, IT WAS GOOD. WHEN I BUILT THE 428, THE TIMING CHAIN COVER (FOR THE LATER MODEL, 11 BOLT WATER PUMP) WAS PITTED ENOUGH THAT I GOT A NEW ONE. THAT COVER WAS MADE JUST DIFERENTLY ENOUGH THAT IT DID IN FACT INTERFERE. WHAT I DID WAS MACHINE JUST ENOUGH TO ALLOW IT TO CLEAR. IT WAS A WHILE BACK AND I HONESTLY DON'T REMEMBER JUST HOW MUCH, BUT TO USE THE NEW COVER, IT HAD TO BE DONE. BE CAREFUL TO NOT TAKE OFF TOO MUCH AS YOU NEED ENOUGH TO FULLY HOUSE THE THERMOSTAT.
WHAT I BELIEVE IT WILL GET DOWN TO IS THE AREA ON THE TIMING COVER THAT IS CLEARANCED FOR THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. IF THAT AREA IS CONCAVED, I'LL SAY YOU HAVE ROOM. OF THAT AREA IS FLAT, YOU MAY BE IN FOR SOME TRIAL AND ERROR.
MY TRI-POWER IS FROM A '66. IT SITS ON THE 670 HEAD CASTINGS FROM THAT 400. RUNS GRRRREAT. I'M CONFIDENT YOU WILL ENJOY THE GREAT CONVERSATION IT BRINGS UP, ALTHOUGH YOU MAY GET TIRED OF PEOPLE SAYING THEY DIDN'T REALIZE THEY CAME OUT THAT WAY.

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CLEAR. WHERE I MACHINED WAS OFF OF THE FACE OF THE MOUNTING AREA AT THE SPOT THE HOUSING MEETS THE MANIFOLD.
