In a nutshell. Edelbrock (came with car not sure of unit type)(sits on a torker btw). Car idles fast (can't seem to lower the idle unless i set the timing too low)..terrible gas mileage and then something wierd. The car wants to stop running when I almost close the hood. Raise the hood...idles again. Nothing is touching the carb and have air cleaner off. I've set the timing and adjusted the screws on the carb (the old fashioned way..run one in and one all the way out..yadda yadda). The vaccuum on the carb reads around 17lbs. Thoughts anyone? My thinking is that the carb is shot and and I'm having to over fuel so when I close the hood it's oxygen starved..
First problem sounds like it may be a vacuum leak. Reset both the idle mixture screws to carb maker's specification, usually 2-4 turns out from lightly seated. Check the carb base bolts, replace the base gasket if the carb has been removed, then check or temporarily plug EVERY vacuum line at the carb or manifold. If you can then control your idle, check to ensure your distributor vacuum advance is on ported, not manifold, vacuum. Reconnect each vacuum line one at a time until the problem recurs. Most likely candidates are brake booster hose or grommet, PCV hose or grommet, or transmission vacuum modulator.
Check clearance between your hood and your ignition system and wiring harnesses. If you can install an air cleaner and close the hood, then you have plenty of clearance for the carb air.

I would agree with Vikki. However to add a little more info, my guess is that the vacuum leak is actually IMPROVING the e-clone's fuel economy. As to the hood issue, my guess would be that moving the hood is moving a vacuum line that is cracked. Watch what moves when you close the hood and I believe you will solve that issue. Doubt you will solve the fuel economy issue with the e-clone.
