I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on installing an aftermarket stereo in a 1969...or maybe any sneaky ways to install a new head unit somewhere else than the original location... Thanks
I usually try to mount the stereo in the glove box and a cd changer in the trunk under the rear shelf. This way you can have a stock looking dash, no cutting, and less tempting to theives! I keep the stock radio in it's stock location. It is also possible to mount the head unit under the dash between th console and the dash. A little uncomfortable, but it's an option. Or you can get a unit that is new tech, but built for older cars. They are advertised in most rags like Car Craft/Hot Rod etc...
Hope this gives you a few ideas? Just don't cut that dash!
Brett! :P

I have installed a cd player in place of the original am radio. All I had to do was to cut the thin metal tabs out with a small metal saw. It took a couple minutes tops. I also made a template in order to make sure that I could put the mounting enclosure that came with the cd player inside the two small rectangular holes which I cut in the metal. Now I can easily access all buttons on the unit, mine didn't have any kind of plastic plate to mess with, but if you had one, I bet you might be able to remove it. The remaining tabs went from this ----- ------- - - - - to this: --- --- - - ---- -----
Thanks for the advice guys...I've been looking at sites like Custom Autosound and even they don't have an application for the 1969 Firebird...very puzzling. So, I think we might try to mount a newer stereo between the dash and the console...just something to run the CD changer through. Anyway, who needs a super-stereo when you can listen to the sweet sounds of pontiac exhaust?
