I need to replace the fenders on my 67 bird conv. Any experience (good or bad) with repo fenders? Any recommendations? Budget is a consideration, but I want it to look right.
Take a stab at your local Pontiac Dealer and see if they won't talk to you about NOS fenders at the wholesale price.
I took the GM resto part list to my local dealer with the items I needed highlighted (to show them how much I would be spending) and they agreed to sell everything to me wholesale. And like any part you order at the dealer - they pick up the tab on the shipping!
I now have a set of beautiful black coated GM fenders for just over $400 each
2012 Mustang Boss 302 #1918, Competition Orange. FGF replacement 2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered. 2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
My buddy bought a repro front fender (FOR HIS CAMARO) and it fit after lots of cussing and hammering. But wasn't exactly quite right. Year One rates the quality of fit by the body parts. I'm not sure on the Firebirds, I haven't needed any. But wanted to let you know anyway.
knuts illustrates what I have heard about the cheap repro fenders from Asia. They don't fit well, are a thinner gauge metal, have poor rustproofing and need lots of body work due to ripples.
Sure, you can get repros for as little as $150, but what good does it do if your body man spends $500 in labor getting them prepped for paint?
They list the fenders for $289.50 each. However, I have heard the shipping cost can outweigh the savings.

I had a fender that I bought four years ago that was wrapped in a GM wrapper, was the right color etc. but it still wasn't a high quality item. Needed much bodywork and still isn't a perfect fit. It might have been a reject part that hung around a warehouse or something but it was supposed to be a GM NOS item.....buyer beware!
