We need to replace our turn signal switch. We're not sure what the cornering light is. They sell it with and without the cornering light. We want to make sure we get the right one. Does anybody know what it is and where it is? Thanks.

That may be the wackiest post I've ever seen on this website!! Welcome my friend!!!
You are correct, there are two different switches for the FGF. One is for the turn signals, the other is for the Hazard lights. Just ensure you are specific when you tell the parts guy at the store which one you are looking for and you'll be good to go.
Now understand, you might be scaring people here by referring to yourself and your bird as "We". I refer to my bird once in a while as "my girl" or "my lady", but you are causing concern here by referring to the car as "we".
All is good my friend. If you need part numbers for the switch let me know.

Thanks for the information. You said that these can be purchased at the auto parts? We haven't checked the auto parts, just Classic and Year One. We would like to know in the picture which one is you? By the way, Ivan is an Ipod and the Firebird is Ivan's. We have another Ipod called Oscar and he has a Honda Civic.

Robert explained it(PM) to me that they lump all the Birds up to the 70's together when they did the switch application. Some of the later Birds do not have the cornering lights.
I'm thinking you are thinking of the flasher Nash, while they are talking about the steering column turn-signal-switch-a-roo. It is true, because I was replacing mine, they do have 2 different kinds of switches. I'd assume the w/ cornering lights to be safest because you'll have all the wires and leads you need, but the harness might connect up different. My guess would be the "cornering lights" they are referring to are the side markers, but thats just a guess.

Q: Cornering Lights (parking lamps) I was reading through my Classic Industries catalog and noticed a "front light harness" which mentions ..."with cornering lights". Pardon my ignorance but does this mean that the lights mounted under the headlights are parking lights only? Do they "flash" when the indicator is set or is a different assembly required ?...Why "cornering lights" ?
A: The "cornerning lights" werent really that.... It was a 2 lamp turnsignal/parking /sidemarker lamp that had an extra single filament bulb on the rear portion of regular housing. If you look at all the 68 front lenses youll see a partition in the lense for 2 seperate bulbs.
This was not the same as other models cornerning lamps such as the Bonnies and GTOs. It was merely an extra parking lamp which helped for a side marker. It operated only when headlamps or parking lamps were on.
It was not an option as some people think. It was standard equiptment for all models of 68s. It was phased out sometime around early Sept.67. Probably a matter of suppliers keeping up with demand. It was a running change so its not clear cut as to when it was phased out. I ve seen some orginal cars built with the provisions (extra wire and socket was clipped off and taped back into harness.) Parts book makes note of this telling service replacement to do the same. Ive had several cars built late into Sept without 2 lamp front lights and some in the 1st week of Sept that have the 2 lamp. From this I would say perhaps the early Sept cars were the last of them.
From the FAQ's...
If your car is a very early '68 it may have cornering lamps.

Thanks Vikki for the information. Our Bird is a '69 and the catalogs showed with or without cornering lights without being specific as to what year of car. This information was very valuable and we learned something new. Our update is that we have replaced our switch in the steering column successfully by ourselves. You would think this is funny if you knew us. LOL. Part of the reason we needed to replace the switch was because our left brake light was only working about half the time. We never knew when it was going to work. Actually made a friend with the police dept. ha ha because of it. We learned from a Master Electrician that the problem was probably in our turn signal switch and sure enough he was right. We found out that by wiggling the directional lever that the brake light would go on and off. Now they're both on solid. Thanks again for your help.

Robert and Family just kicked my butt on a private PM for picking on his clan for using the "we" approach. I feel bad, did not mean to hurt anyones feelings here.
Couldn't help myself with the pic though. I trust you regulars understand my warped sense of humour. Robert and clan will hopefully accept my PM apologies.
