I had my car out for the first time in many months over the weekend, and it was running extremely rough and died several times. Here's the lowdown.
Car was running great several months ago, then wouldn't start at all. Took off the fuel line and wasn't getting any fuel at all, so I replaced the fuel pump with a new one from the auto parts store. The car started right up, so I figured it was fine (but I didn't drive it).
Over the weekend, though it started pretty easily, it felt like it was only getting power in quick 1/2 second surges (followed by 1/2 second sputters).
So my question is: Is it possible I got a bad fuel pump, or installed it wrong? Or anything else I might look at. Also it's a Holley 600 carb... maybe change the internal gas filter (I think these carbs have a filter in them???)
If I remember correctly the Holley has internal filter....it may clogged...maybe you had bad gas before and still some anfter the change of pump..? some in the line(s)...blow it out , also blow the line out, backwards...maybe that would do it..
I would look at the inline filters first, then after the gas tank. If the car sat for a period, may have condensation and water in the gas or the tank has crud in it which is causing restrictions in the fuel lines.
Possible to get a bad fuel pump? yes, likely no. When a new fuel pump fails it usually leaks rel bad into the crankcase.
Maybe check the cam eccentric for the fuel pump lever. Well, not that, maybe the cam eccentric is loose or worn.. long shot.

I tried my best when I installed the new pump to make sure I got the cam lever under the cam. With the bolts not all the way tightened, I was able to push down on the new pump and feel the "plunging" effect, so that made me feel comfortable that I was actually under the came and not on top of it.
