I know I might catch a bunch of "Newbie" flak for this, but I wanted to brain storm with those who have been there and done that!
I have a '67 vert with:
very fresh 326 3K miles on it. edelbrock performer intake (supposed to be like stock) Edelbrock performer 600 cfm carb (tuned pretty good) stock 140 heads 4speed (I would not think it's 1st gear, runs out quickly) 3.23 gears with posi 260H comp cam
Now I know the 326 is no barn burner, but it should be able to make somewhat respectable power. What is a good head for this motor for more torque, low end power?
My buddy runs a 350 with a 280H cam and 1.65 rockers. His heads are #16's with a 4 speed and 3.23's, and he can flat out rip with his combo.
Is my cam killing me, is it my stock heads, or my lowly 326?
I've tried to see what heads are out there, but I know that they try to match up to the motor and cam, and cannot decide whats good, if you can recommend a head, could you detail why? Sure would like to learn about the reasoning too.
Valve size versus, cc or cr. I'm also trying to understand why my cam would be iffy if his 280H is more extreme but runs real well.
Thanks to any and all that can shed some light. Heck I'll take article links or what have you.
bummer, I was hoping there were some "stock" parts that would allow some realistic power out of the 326. I would have thought I should be able to spin the tires on this setup with relative ease. Of course in Colorado the air is thin.
This just strengthens my resolve for the engine swap I have set to go. To bad though, this motor is brand spanking new, and runs pretty well.
I was gonna run the 326 all summer and go to my LT1 later, but not with the lack of power I've been getting out of this motor. The LT1 is in a donor 1995 Formula Firebird, so as far as I'm concerned I'm still staying with Pontiac.
It is the bore/stroke ratio that is killing you. If you were to replicate a 326 HO motor, you may be happy. With all that said, it would cost as much (when it is all done) to build a 400 and be done with it.
You can only buy cast pistons for a 326 and they will not hold up well to performance gains. Custom 326 forged? $600 plus.
To be honest, stick with what you have until you save up and collect the parts for a 400 build or replicate a 350 HO with #13 or 16 heads and mill them down to 63-64 cc.. Most of your 326 accessories will bolt on. All you will need is a carb, intake, block and heads. Buy some here, some there. You will be suprised what you collect.

Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear. I have a line on a 350, don't know what heads yet. My LT1 is a friggin screamer backed by a T56 6 speed will make a nice combo.
I'll see if I can get my hands on that 350 first, I really want to detail the LT1 before stuffing it in.
skip the lt1 altogether!!! you can burn it down with a stout pontiac engine anyday!! look around and find a good block, bore it out and put a set of 16's on it. you'll have no problem smokin the tires when your done. id build the 400 befor stuffing the LT1 in as you'll see better results with this switch than the fi engine! imo!
