Codes - All
Short answer: A car is considered “numbers matching” if all the part numbers and casting codes are correct and pre-date the car by the usual 1–3 months. Use the year-specific drivetrain ID pages on FGF as your guide:

Short answer: A 1967 trim-tag model number like 67-2-2637 decodes as: 67 = year, 2 = division (Pontiac), 2637 = style — where 26 = Custom Trim and 37 = Firebird coupe. The “23” listed in the ID books is the VIN identifier, which didn’t distinguish standard vs. custom trim.
The RPO options (Fisher Body accessory codes) are listed along the bottom of the 1967 trim tag — for example L, 2GW, 3F, 4Q, where 3F denotes the “400” option. These are the “Five Group Accessory Codes.”

Short answer: On 1967 body tags, accessory options are encoded in a “Five Group” system (along the bottom of the trim tag), discontinued after 1967. The letter codes for each group are below — some remain unknown, and the Registry is still decoding them.
Example firewall tag:
278 07B
ST 67-22667 LOR 9854 Body
TR 256-Z K-2 Paint
EX 2EWGH 3M
4F 5Y
The “278” in the upper-left is most likely the Fisher Body Sequence Number. Note the consecutive build number on the body tag (9854) won’t match the sequential production number in the VIN — they meant different things at the plants.
| Code | Meaning |

Short answer: Trim code 281 is the saddle (tan/brown) leather interior — a genuine 1968 option, though a late-year addition (around early June), so check your invoice/billing date.
On a matching original car, the dash pad should be brown/tan/gold, and the convertible boot and deluxe wheel (if applicable) should be tan/brown to match. Note the 281 door panels used tan/brown vinyl with a “faux leather-grain” finish.

Short answer: On a 1969 paint code like 61F, the “61” (PNT 61) is the body color — Expresso Brown — and the trailing letter is the Cordova (vinyl) top color. The “F” most likely represents Dark Fawn.
The 1969 order form used numbers for top colors while the firewall data plate used letters, and the crossover between them is inconsistent (which is why this one is hard to pin down).
1969 Cordova (vinyl) top colors — order form: 2 = black, 3 = dark blue, 5 = parchment, 8 = dark fawn, 9 = dark green.
Convertible tops: 1 = white, 2 = black, 3 = dark blue, 9 = dark green.
On the data plate (letters): A = white (conv.), B = black (all), C = dark blue (all), E = parchment (coupe), F = dark fawn (coupe, best guess), G = dark green (all).

Short answer: The engine, transmission, and component codes for a 1968 Firebird 350 H.O. are below.
| Engine | Code | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 350 H.O. Manual | WK | 320 hp, 10.5:1 |
| 350 H.O. Automatic | YM | 320 hp, 10.5:1 |
| Transmission | Maker | Code |
|---|---|---|
| 3-speed standard (column shift) | Saginaw | RJ |
| 3-speed standard (floor shift) | Dearborn | DB |
| 4-speed optional | Muncie | FX |
| 2-speed automatic | ST-300 | MB |
| 2-speed automatic (w/ A/C) | ST-300 | MC |
Other components: Cylinder heads “18” · Carburetor: MT 7028269 / AT 7028266 · Intake manifold (same as all 4-bbl): 9790140 · Exhaust manifolds (same as Std. & 400): 9794320 RH / 9777755 LH · Distributor: MT 1111447 / AT 1111282.
For reference, 2,087 400 H.O. Firebirds were made in 1968; the 350 H.O. count is likely similar or a bit lower.

Short answer: That number near the distributor is the block casting number — the full number is 9786133, which denotes a 1967 400 cid block (it’s like a part number, not the sequential build/serial number, which is on the front passenger side). Short answer: Pontiac rear-axle housings can be identified by year using their date codes, stamped codes, and a few physical features. The 1969 axle ID codes differ from 1967–68 — the full table is below.
Identifying features by year:
- 1967: the center section has the loops for A-body control-arm bushings plus leaf-spring perches and factory traction-bar brackets; a date code is cast into the center section.
- 1968: dropped the control-arm loops and traction-bar mounts, but used the same codes as 1967.
- 1969: the date-code position moved to the other side of the center section, and flattened spots were added on top of the axle tubes where the snubbers meet (1967–68 have none).
- All three years carry a 2-letter stamped code about 3–5″ to the left of the center section, on the rear of the left (driver-side) axle tube — often hidden behind the steel brake line.
When identifying a rear end, check the cast date codes (same style as engine parts), the axle code (rear of left tube), spring-perch depth (1967 Monoplates are shallow), the extra traction-bar brackets (1967 only), and the flattened spots on top (1969 only).

Short answer: The billing-history line “F70x14 RL FG / TMT / $57.93 / $41.80 / $2.93” decodes as: the tires originally installed were F70x14 Redlines, Fiberglass-Belted; “TMT” is that tire’s sales code; the dollar amounts are tire cost plus final destination/handling charges.

Short answer: The numbers on the Billing History are sales codes, organized into groups (numbered 34 through 80). Within each group, the last digit identifies which option(s) you have — and if you have more than one option in a group, the option numbers are added together.
Examples: Group 34 is engine options — 347 = Ram Air, 341 = Sprint. Group 52 includes disc brakes and the custom shifter knob — disc brakes alone = 521; disc brakes + custom shifter knob = 525.

Content last modified: June 13, 2026 at 10:06 am
Short answer: The Body Broadcast Sheet was the assembly line’s build instructions for a specific car. It usually wasn’t meant to stay with the car, but many unrestored 1968s (especially Lordstown-built) still have at least one — sometimes up to four — full or partial sheets tucked somewhere inside (occasionally for the car built before yours).
Common hiding spots:
- Under the rear seat (lower or upper half — sometimes stuck in the springs)
- Between the track and seat assembly on the passenger front seat
- Under the carpet underlayment (sound deadener) on the floor pan
- Between the seat cover and cushion (only look if the cover is already bad)
- Between the gas tank and trunk floor pan
- Behind the door and rear-quarter trim panels (especially on convertibles)
- Under the instrument-panel pad (usually only a partial)
Handle it carefully — it’s usually brittle, and ones under the sound deadener may be bonded to the underlayment (keep the whole thing; it’s still readable).
The Broadcast Sheet uses supplier-component and Fisher Body codes, while the Billing History uses sales codes — different systems, but decoded properly both reveal the same basics (engine, trans, options, wheels). The Broadcast Sheet is also useful for authenticating and detailing a car.

Short answer: The body build-date code lives on the Fisher Body trim tag (firewall) and the Protect-O-Plate — it’s unique to the body shell and doesn’t appear on the Billing History. The body build date was generally about a week before the Billing History invoice date: the tag date is when Fisher Body sequenced the shell for build; the invoice date is when it cleared Final Assembly and certification just before shipping.

Short answer: A code like C363 in the upper area of the trim tag is from the Van Nuys, CA assembly plant — most likely an internal Fisher Body plant-sequencing code, loosely tied to the vehicle order number. No formal documentation has surfaced, and it has no connection to the VIN, body number, build date, or options.

Short answer: A code like K464 is an internal Van Nuys assembly-plant sequence number. It has no connection to the Body Unit Number, VIN, engine unit number, or invoice number — it’s strictly a plant sequencing number, and no GM or Fisher Body documentation has surfaced to decipher it.
Example tag:
05D K464 ST 68-22437 LOS 3573 BODY TR 253 I-2
The sequence number derives from the dealer order number. Van Nuys put it on the trim tag (and the Body/Chassis Broadcast “build sheets”); Lordstown used a different system and didn’t put it on the tag. Cars with very close VINs don’t have sequential body/sequence numbers — the plant numbers have no direct tie to the VIN.

Short answer: A code like T339 is an in-plant tracking / special-options code. Each 1969 assembly plant (Los Angeles, Lordstown, Norwood) used its own coding system, and since no plant records have surfaced, these can’t be reliably deciphered.

Content last modified: June 13, 2026 at 10:06 am
Short answer: The Fisher Body Unit Number on the firewall trim tag is an internal sequencing number, unique to each assembly plant — it is not sequential and has no direct relationship to the VIN or build date. The Broadcast Department assigned it based on the order’s color, model, options, etc., and cars weren’t built in the order received.
- Two cars ordered the same day can get very different unit numbers — e.g., VIN 164250 / Body Unit 4886 vs. VIN 164279 / Body Unit 7679.
- The trim-tag build date marks the month/week the body began in the body shop (Body in White). It generally took under a week from receiving the trim tag to leaving Final Assembly, and only about a day to finish a car once it moved from Fisher Body to the Final Assembly plant.
- The Billing History invoice date is when the car was “bought off” after Final Assembly (starting billing/delivery). Special orders can show a few weeks between the body build date and the invoice date.

Short answer: Carburetor number 7037262 decodes as a 1967 (4th digit “7”), late-half-of-year (3rd digit “3”) unit for a California-emissions V-8 automatic (last digit even = automatic; odd would be manual). It doesn’t list as a Firebird carb — likely a GTO unit. It’s a rare carb worth trading, but not worth spending a lot to fix if it isn’t correct for your car.

Short answer: The 1968 Custom Trim Option is code 554, and the trim-tag style number tells you what your car has. Note that the Custom Trim Option (554) and the Custom/Deluxe interior are separate — you can have the option with standard interior.
| Coupe | Conv. | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 22337 | 22367 | Standard interior, no Custom Trim option |
| 22437 | 22467 | Standard interior, with Custom Trim option |
| 22637 | 22667 | Deluxe (Custom) interior, with Custom Trim option |
Custom Trim Option (554) included: deluxe wheel discs, deluxe steering wheel, molded-vinyl door and quarter trim, vinyl-and-weave seats, roof-rail moldings, wheel-opening moldings, instrument-panel grip (grab bar), pedal trim, and dual horns. It also came with different (longer) window regulators.
Speculated as included (not confirmed): 160-mph speedo, “BIRD” emblem on the glove-box door, custom/deluxe seat belts (brushed-metal buckles), the small white “BIRD” etched on the front side glass, interior windshield A-pillar moldings, and wheel trim rings (when ordered with Rally II wheels).
Any of these items could be ordered individually on a standard-interior car (22437/22467) — except the deluxe interior itself, which defines 22637/22667.

Short answer: A few weeks’ gap between an engine’s date code and the Fisher Body trim-tag date is completely normal — nothing to worry about. The rule of thumb for drivetrain parts is roughly 2 weeks to 3 months before the body build date (about 6 weeks is the usual maximum), and generally not after, though exceptions exist.
- The trim-tag date is when the body shell was assembled at Fisher Body — not final assembly. The final date is the “Invoice Date” on the Billing History (when the car was certified to ship).
- Worked example: a body shell scheduled the 4th week of October 1967 (the 23rd–27th), with a “WK” block (date code I177) cast Oct. 17, 1967 — cast on a Tuesday, likely assembled around the 20th–23rd, then a couple more days to reach Lordstown for final assembly. So it could easily have gone into a body built that same week.
- Low-production cars were often built in batches, so many of the same model/color/engine ran through within the same period.
As always with date codes, there are no absolutes — inventory control 30 years ago wasn’t what it is today.

Bulletin 68-I-37 — Pontiac Motor Division Dealer Service Information Bulletin, Section 5, dated January 31, 1968. Attention: Service Manager.
Subject: 1968 Tempest Rear Brake Drums.
Short answer: Some early-production 1968 Tempests were built with Kelsey-Hayes rear brake drums stamped “F” instead of the specified “KH” identification. Future drums will use the combined code “KH-F.” All three codes (“KH,” “F,” or “KH-F”) represent acceptable Kelsey-Hayes drums — a variation between right and left drums is not a concern.
Pontiac Engineering has advised that certain early-production Tempests were built using Kelsey-Hayes rear brake drums coded with identification letter “F”, rather than the specified identification “KH”.
Future Tempest rear drums manufactured by Kelsey-Hayes will incorporate the code letters “KH-F” as an optional identification.
Since Kelsey-Hayes drums with any one of these codes (“KH”, “F”, or “KH-F”) are installed in production, there should be no cause for concern regarding the variation of code between right and left rear drums.

Short answer: A Pontiac dealer code on your build sheet or Billing History breaks into three parts — a Region code, a Zone code, and a Dealer code. The full lookup tables, a step-by-step decoder with examples, and a form to contribute additions are all below.
Where these codes appear: Window Sticker, Billing History, Broadcast Sheet, and Protecto Plate.
The codes and most of their meanings were compiled by the Ultimate GTO Picture Site, the Generation-1 Firebird Registry, and Wallace Racing.
Two things worth knowing:
- “99*” codes (Zone Stock): a “99*” dealer number marks a Zone Storage Lot — cars shipped to storage within a Zone for first-come, first-served sale to a retail dealer (sometimes sitting days, weeks, or months). These are not the same as Company Cars, which were used by Zone employees and later sold to a dealer at a steep discount. Each Zone likely had multiple storage locations.
- Duplicate dealer codes: one dealer name can have two codes. A dealer’s code can change — even without a name change — when the dealer principal named in paragraph three of the franchise agreement changes.
Have information to add? Use the contribution form below the tables — private information is never published.

Short answer: Here’s how that set of engine/carb/manifold markings decodes:
- YR — engine usage/type code
- 33202 — Engine Unit Number
- 23N108627 — partial VIN, unique to the car the engine came from
- E220 (on the intake) — a date code (e.g., May 22, 1970?)
- 9796155 (on the exhaust manifold) — a part/casting number
- 17054905 — Rochester carburetor usage code
- 2738 — carburetor build-date code (e.g., 273rd day of 1968?)

Short answer: 1969 body-tag color coding is notoriously confusing — it varied by plant and even by shift, since these were built “BC” (before computers). Two expert readings of that “G”: it may be the Antique Gold convertible-top color (an “Upper Color” on the 1969 order form), paired with Verdoro Green paint; or, converting GM corporate codes to Pontiac codes, “73” = Verdoro Green and the following “G” = Dark Green. The trim code (206) is standard green vinyl.

Bottom line: 1969 tags really only tell you body style, color, and trim — and even those have plant-to-plant deviations. As the experts put it, 1969 is the hardest year of the three to decode.

Short answer: The key documents for researching a 1967–69 Firebird are the Trim Tag, the Chassis and Body Broadcast Sheets, and the Billing History — with the Billing History being the most important.
Dealer Order / Trim Tag: Created when the dealer ordered the car. Fisher Body’s trim tag defines the basics affecting the bare shell (model, color, trim, glass, major power options); its date code is the month/week the shell was assembled — the finished car could roll off Final Assembly a week or more later.
Chassis Broadcast Sheet: Build instructions for the chassis — engine, trans, axle, plus belts, pulleys, hoses, brakes, steering, suspension, radiator. Sometimes left on top of the fuel tank; very rare to find.
Body Broadcast Sheet: Build instructions for trim/final — console, radio, seats, emblems, wiring, options. Often tucked in the rear-seat springs, under carpet, or in the bucket seats. Lets you document a car’s essentials on the spot.
Billing History: Tracks the car and its costs from plant to dealer — key codes, engine unit number, options, drivetrain, dealer codes, and the invoice date (closer to the true finish date than the trim tag). Originally free from PMD; now provided for a fee by Pontiac Historic Services (Jim Mattison).

Short answer: For a 1969, the way to confirm a numbers-matching engine is that the VIN on the dash matches the partial VIN stamped on the front right-hand face of the block (the partial VIN was also stamped on manual transmission cases and hidden on the body shell). The Engine Unit Number is a separate sequencing number — found on the Protecto-Plate and Chassis Broadcast Copy — with no tie to the VIN, so without the original Protecto-Plate it can’t be verified.
Background:
- 1969 documentation, in order: Chassis Broadcast Copy, Body Broadcast Copy, Car Billing Invoice, Window Sticker, Owner Protecto-Plate.
- The Fisher Body Unit Number is NOT purely sequential — cars were built in batches by many scheduling factors, not order received. It’s on the Broadcast Copies, Protecto-Plate, and Window Sticker. (For 1969, the Body Unit Number and Identification Number were the same.)
- A 3-digit Sequence Number on the Broadcast Copies was used for batch scheduling, with no sequential tie to other numbers.
- The trim-tag date code is the Fisher Body scheduled build date for the bare shell (“Body in White”), not the finished car — the closest finished date is on the invoice.

Short answer: The clue is the partial VIN stamp (20P105982): the leading 0 means a 1970 car, and the P means it was built at the Pontiac assembly plant (which was building full-size cars like Catalina/Bonneville that year). For 1970, “YD” indicates a 2-barrel 400, ~290 gross hp from a full-size Pontiac — so this engine isn’t a 1967 Firebird 400.

Short answer: The engine build-date code is on the top surface around the distributor hole — a letter plus three digits: the letter is the month (A = Jan, B = Feb, …), the next two digits are the day, and the last digit is the year. Example: B157 = Feb 15, 1967.

Short answer: The engine “serial” (Unit) number and the VIN are two different numbers and will never match. But starting in 1968, a partial VIN was also stamped on the block — on the front lower face near the timing cover/harmonic balancer — and that should match your car’s VIN. If it does, it’s the original engine for the car.
- The Engine Unit Number is an internal plant sequencing number (used to match an engine to a specific car). It appears on the Broadcast Sheet and Billing History, with no tie to the VIN — cars with very close VINs can have unit numbers hundreds or thousands apart.
- The block VIN is hard to see — remove the lower radiator hose at the water-pump housing, or use a mirror and light down by the harmonic balancer.
- Engines arrived at final assembly fully assembled, stamped with a two-letter usage/application code (plus a white-and-red label) so the line installed the right parts; the VIN was stamped just before the engine went into the car.
- Service bulletins reference engine unit numbers (e.g., 1967 Ram Air engines: 1st type through unit #646615, 2nd type from #646616).

Short answer: A one-digit difference like 205848 vs. 205818 is almost certainly the same number — a weak or partial stamping, not a wrong engine. The Engine Unit Number and partial VIN were hand-stamped (shallower than the code stamp), and the gang-stamp tool could slip during the strike, leaving a “4” looking like a “1.” Given how close they are, it’s the original engine — nothing to lose sleep over.

Short answer: A three-digit code to the left of the build-date code on the top line of the trim tag (e.g., “111” before “05C”) is most likely the Fisher Body Sequence Number used for production scheduling.

Short answer: Headrests (head restraints) were an option — here’s how they show up across the documentation (note the sources don’t fully agree on the code):
- Billing card/manifest: 1967 = code 572; 1968 = code 572; 1969 = nothing listed.
- Sales manual: 1968 head restraints = code 571, $52.66.
- Body tags: 1967 has trim codes (Z = buckets without headrests, Y = buckets with headrests, H = standard bench); 1968 and 1969 references have no headrest body-tag code.

Short answer: The one hidden VIN most people agree on is the cowl VIN, stamped below the cowl cover. Beyond that, claims of “secret” VIN locations are mostly speculation — suspected spots include somewhere on the subframe, along the trunk gutter, and on the floor pan, but these aren’t reliably documented. Non-factory weld seams are the easier authenticity tell.

Short answer: “Numbers matching” means the body and its drivetrain (engine/trans/axle) are the original parts that left the line together, verified by VIN, part/casting numbers, and date codes. Here’s what each number on the car means:
- VIN: 13-digit, assigned at Fisher Body before Final Assembly; encodes division, series, model, year, plant, engine (V-8/6-cyl) plus a 5-digit serial. On a tag at the top LH dash; from 1968 also stamped (minus series/model) on the engine block and manual trans case, plus “hidden VINs” on frame/cowl/trunk gutter.
- Body Number: Fisher Body’s consecutive build number, on the trim tag and Broadcast Sheet (2–5 digits). No consistent pattern vs. the VIN. (1968 plants: LOR = Lordstown, LOS = Van Nuys.)
- Engine Unit Number: 6 digits on the front RH face of the block (V-8s start with 2, 6-cyls with 6). A tracking number, also on the Billing History and Protecto-Plate; no sequential tie to the VIN.
- Identification Number: 6 digits, on the Broadcast Sheet and bottom of the Window Sticker; trends higher with the VIN but isn’t directly sequential to it.
- Sequence Number: 3 digits, Broadcast Sheet only; plant scheduling, no tie to other numbers.
- Invoice Number: 6 digits preceded by a letter; billing only, on the Billing History.
- Casting / Part Numbers: on most cast parts (block, heads, manifolds, timing covers, transmission, axle housing) — usually the part number, sometimes an assembly.
- Date-Coded Parts: many parts carry a cast/stamped date (e.g., engine “L227” = Dec 22, 1967 — and yes, “I” was used in 1968). A part should date before the body (trim-tag date), ideally within a month or so. Dated parts include the engine, heads, manifolds, carb, alternator, starter, transmission, axle, glass, shocks, gauges, tachs, clocks, shifters, fan, master cylinder, mirrors, water pump, distributor, mufflers, brake drums, calipers, and steering box.

Short answer: “Special” means the car got the Special Paint Option — a color Pontiac didn’t offer as a standard choice. In 1968 these were usually Pink Mist, Carnival Red, Marigold Yellow, or Windward Blue Iridescent (“Irid.” = metallic; the others were solid).
Some were late-year spring-release colors, and essentially any color was available if the supplier could provide it — such cars often shipped with an extra quart of paint. (The number after “Special” denotes the top.)

Short answer: A “PRIME” paint code (PRIME-XXX) means the car was handled as a special paint situation — primer only or special-order paint, seen on things like special orders, race cars, or company cars. It’s uncommon. The “2” indicates a black top.

Short answer: The Protect-O-Plate is a small credit-card-style plate (kept in the owner’s manual) that identified the car for warranty service — it was run through an imprint machine like a credit card. The format varied: some are plastic that read normally, others are metal imprinted in reverse and mounted on card stock.

Short answer: For a 1968 Firebird with disc brakes, the correct Rally II wheel code is “JC” (the same as drum brakes) — per the 1968 Service Manual, 1968 Parts Book, broadcast sheet, and verified original cars. The widespread “JA for disc” claim is a technical error carried over from the 1967–68 GTO / 1967 Firebird.

Short answer: Pontiac wheel/Rally II codes are confusing — per a 1971 parts book, 1967 used JA (disc brakes) and JC (drum brakes), while 1968 used JC for all (even though the disc parts were the same for 1967 and 1968). The full application/code table is below.
More detail on decoding the codes stamped on a rim: the Classic Pontiac Server wheel page and Wallace Racing’s rally-wheel date-code page.

Short answer: Rally II wheels came in 30–40 varieties — the only way to know what you have is the two-letter code at the valve stem (that’s the WHEEL code the parts book uses: rim + center + offset). A code stamped inside the rim is just the rim type; the larger center hole is a non-issue (caps fit), but offset matters.
- 1968: JC = Firebird, JA = Tempest/LeMans/GTO. Later (1971–74) Ventura II wheels have different offsets.
- 14×7 examples: JK = 1969 Firebird/Grand Prix, JM = 1970 (same, exc. Trans Am), JS = 1971, KS = 1972. The 1970 Trans Am had a special deep-dish wheel that takes no trim ring.
- Offsets here run ~4″ to 4.5″ backspacing — fine as long as you don’t go crazy on tire size. A 14×6 is limited to about a 225/60-14 (a 215/60-14 fits a bit better; a 70-series gives a taller tire).

Notes:
- All Ram Air cars were shipped to the dealer with the baffle, shroud, air filter, seals, and open hood scoops in the trunk (early on, guards/inspectors removed these to the parts crib over theft concerns; later forwarded to dealers for installation).
- All Ram Air cars used a standard 4-blade cooling fan unless the Flex-Fan was ordered.
- Cars with both Ram Air and the underhood lamp had the lamp moved slightly outboard at the dealer to clear the baffle; the underhood structure near the RH scoop was also trimmed (usually a crude, noticeable cut) for the baffle to seal.
- The Broadcast-Sheet code for Ram Air engines was “Y.” No Ram Air code appears on the trim tag or VIN.
- Fewer than 50 Ram Air Firebirds have been accounted for. RA-I production: Aug 1967–May 1968 (earliest known Oct 1967). RA-II production started May 20, 1968 (option code still 347, higher price); last 1968 RA-II invoiced Aug 6, 1968.
Corrections from members: Most 1968 RA-II engines actually used standard 400 blocks (9790071) fitted with four-bolt caps — some had the last four digits ground off and re-stamped “2506,” but most were left 9790071. Also, the cylinder-head casting numbers were cast, not stamped (all 1967 RA “997” heads and 1968 RA-I/RA-II “31”/”96″ heads) — heads with stamped numbers were done by racers for NHRA, not the factory.

Short answer: The two-letter axle code is stamped on the driver’s-side axle tube, facing the rear, roughly 6″ from the differential cover (near/to the left of the brake clip). It’s often rusty — expect to wire-brush/sand to read it.

Short answer: Leather (code 281, Saddle) became available on the 1968 Firebird on June 6, 1968, only with the Custom Trim option and only in that one Saddle color. It’s a very rare option — documented on only a few 1968 Firebirds in the Registry.

Short answer: A “SHOW” code (SHOW-1, SHOW-2, etc.) means the car was built as a show vehicle — scheduled during pre-production by Engineering or Styling, built on the regular line but treated specially, with better fit and finish and unique extra-shine paint. They’re rare (usually very early production), and a “SHOW” first-gen Firebird is a genuinely rare find.

Short answer: Carousel Red was a special-order paint (code SPR) for the 1969 Firebird — and despite the popular legend, there’s nothing more special about it. It was GM’s answer to the bright colors Ford and Chrysler were running in the psychedelic era.
- Pontiac released four bright special-order colors for 1968 — Windward Blue, Goldenrod Yellow, Pink, and the equivalent of Carousel Red — available on all Pontiacs, not just the Firebird.
- The invoice notes are routine, not special: OPTIONAL LOC = the car was unloaded at the dealer’s separate storage lot; ADV.ASSN.COL = “Advertising Association Collected,” a per-car charge funding local dealer-group advertising. Neither means the car was used for promotion.

Short answer: The important 1968 tracking numbers and where to find them:
- VIN: 13-digit, assigned at Fisher Body before Final Assembly (division, series, model, year, plant, engine + 5-digit serial). On a tag at the top LH dash; new for 1968, also stamped (minus series/model) on the engine block and manual trans case.
- Body Number: Fisher Body’s consecutive build number on the trim tag and Broadcast Sheet (2–5 digits; 1968 plants LOR = Lordstown, LOS = Van Nuys). No consistent pattern vs. the VIN.
- Engine Unit Number: 6 digits on the front RH face of the block (V-8s start with 2, 6-cyls with 6). A tracking number, also on the Billing History and Owner Warranty plate; no tie to the VIN.
- Identification Number: 6 digits on the Broadcast Sheet and bottom of the Window Sticker; trends higher with the VIN but isn’t directly sequential.
- Sequence Number: 3 digits, Broadcast Sheet only; plant scheduling, no tie to other numbers.
- Invoice Number: 6 digits preceded by a letter; billing only, on the Billing History.

Short answer: The number on the body tag and the VIN won’t match — that’s normal. The VIN is the sequential production number; the body-tag number is the Unit (consecutive build) number. They’re separate systems.
Engine stampings in this example:
- 508743 = Motor (engine) Unit Number
- YJ = 8-cylinder, 326 cid, 250 hp, 9.2:1 compression, 2-barrel carb, automatic transmission
- The “GM4” block casting marking’s meaning isn’t known.
