I have the same problem some times...my linkage is missing between the col shifter part and the console shifter....these cars while having a console shifter , still shift via the column...the 'american easy way' to change from col. to floor shift...anyway , the neutral switch is in there , you got to turn the col cover all the way to the left to make contact...sometimes it will turn back as you drive , mine did...I put a screw in mine to hold it it place , but it still moves some at times , just a 1/32" or so, you may have a bad neutral switch too, maybe that little end is cracking , its like a plastic piece about the size of the end of a match stick...
I also moved my neutral switch to a hidden location to be used as a 'kill switch' ( a wiggle switch) that you hold while cranking....only thing to remember ,it can start in ANY gear...
Sounds like its the neutral switch or the col. cover that just is some off....
