What's left of my trunk light wiring is like Yellowbird's. There is a splitter under the trunk latch that taps into the license light wiring. From there, it is routed back past the left tail lights to the left hinge support. At that point there is another connector where the light can be disconnected if the hood is removed. I have that connector and about 8 inches of wire which has then been cut. With this set up, the light will only be on when the license light is lit.
My replacement light (not installed yet) is from M&H and has a splitter to tap into the dome light harness near the left wheel well. The M&H light has a black wire with a tilt switch. This light will work any time the trunk is opened. This sounds like the setup Bjorn has.
I would also like to see a picture of the correct underhood lamp and how it is mounted. I got a replacement from one of the usual catalog suppliers and the directions show mounting points for Pontiac and Tempest. Both of these mount to the firewall. Seems to me that the light would be mounted too low to do any good!
