i finally found the vin on the block! now i need to try and decode it. It is:
22P446266
I also found the code for my rear end, it is an XF 3.23 open diff.

1972 engine from Pontiac assembly plant, I believe that plant was building Bonnevilles and Catalinas in 1972.
