hello, when i start the engine it makes a moderate screeching sound always. its not the missing-gear-tooth on the flywheel sound but still obnoxious. i'm thinking the starter is not properly shimmed. basically its the same as it was 25 years ago (engine sat for that long). how do you know how many shims are supposed to be in ? thanks
normally you need to have the trans off to use a wire type feeler gauge to measure the clearance. if you go about halfway down this page on my site you can see me doing the clearance measurement. i am sure there may be other ways that a seasoned mechanic may use without removing the tranny but this is the way i know. http://www3.telus.net/68bird/engine_install.htm
I just used a screwdriver to pry the pinion gear out of the starter to engage the flywheel and used a piece of welding wire 0.035" to check my gap. All while the transmission is in.
I know that washing and waxing my car with the present condtion of my paint is like polishing a turd.....but it's my turd and I want it polished!
