Was on the freeway today when all of a sudden I start getting this horrible loud screeching buzz coming from the dash. I got off the freeway and once at idle it stopped. Revving the engine at all will make it come back. If I lift up on the sterring wheel hard enough it will stop.
I have a feeling its that speedometer alarm needle causing it but I have it set at 130mph. IF it is, is there a way to disable that thing?
Any ideas? It is a very horrid sound.
Thanks
Max

I remember reading someplace about a speedo warning system which (called Speed Minder!) provides a 2nd setable pointer on the speedo that provides a buzzing alarm when the speedo needle reaches the preset alarm needle. So there would also be an adjustment knob on the speedo.

No answers to original question here...but some discussion/reference about the "Speed Minder" option if you scroll down: https://firstgenfirebird.org/FAQ/interior/dash.htmlI'm guessing here, but I'm willing to assume if you were to find a part kinda like this somewhere on your car and unplug it, the buzzing will stop... http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPEED-MINDER-Buz...8-/230933935462And I have to assume this horrible buzzing part should not be difficult to locate if it's stuck "on" and you can follow your ears. But it might be challenging to locate while driving down the freeway and trying to keep the car between the walls LOL...

It is definatley the speedminder. I can make it buzz by simply hitting the bottom of the steering column or shaking wires around up around the dash cluster.
The issue is, what is the easiest way to take the cluster out so I can see what is going on back there?
Do I need to take my entire dash apart? I know this would be a huge undertaking. I did find a few wires and the end of a plug up there that has came unplugged and I have no idea what it is to or where to connect it because it is so cramped up in there.
Any ideas?

Acording to the AMA specs I found somewhere on this site [don't know if I could do it again] Pontiac called them a 'safeguard' speedometer.

Had one on my 1969 coupe and loved the option. I used it pretty much every day. Was a great option to have in Canada as we are in kilometers, helped keep the speeding down a bit. lol David
