Hi Everyone....Unfortunately when I left my car sitting for the last couple of years while I was stationed in VA, parts of the transmission dried up ETC. and wouldnt shift out of first gear. This is a shame because the tranny was purchased new (TH350) 8 years ago and proabably has 400 miles on it.
I took it into a transmission shop and they said it either needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
I have always wanted a 4 speed automatic because driving the TH350 it always seemed like there should be another gear there. Anyways....Its going to be close to $2000 all said and done for a rebuilt TH400 installed, new torque converter etc (and they would throw in installing the new hurst shift)
Question is if I wanted to put in a 4 speed automatic...would it be that much more and would it fit easily using a 700R or 200? Any and all informtation would be greatly appreciated.
I currently have a 350 motor in it.(I am not drag racing and probably wouldnt push more then 400hp if I eventually replaced the motor.)

I'd go with a 200-4R, the TH400 is big, heavy, and takes more engine power to turn...and it ain't got no overdrive.
2 Grand should be close enough for the trans and any adapter/install kit stuff needed.

What is your rear end ratio?

I am not sure on rear end ratio. The car was originally a 6 cylinder and I dont think my uncles swapped it out once they put in a 350.
What kind of modification would need to be made if I put in a 200-4R?
Thanks again for the help.

I know for a 2004R tranny swap, you need to have a TH400 crossmember and it needs to be in the Th400 position. A 350 crossmember will not work., you will also most likely need to shorten the driveshaft also.

The only way I would go through the expense of an AOD transmission would be if I had 3.55 or steeper gears and or I did a lot of highway driving. I would be interested Or... http://americanpowertrain.com/c-320367-s...o-firebird.htmlif I had the money and wanted performance..I would go with a 3.90 or 4.11 rear with a 700R4. 700R4 with BOP adapter plate and tail housing so no need to change cross member. 200R4 are junk and are 2.5 times the cost to rebuild and not as reliable as a 700R4

X2 A friend spent over $2700 for a 200r4 and convertor and all the other B.S. from a popular trans company that was supposed to have all the good parts. The junk only lasted 4 months before he had to throw another $650 at it. I'll stick with my t350's - t400's.

Havent had a problem with my 2004R and wasnt very hard to put it in. The worse part is the TV cable. 2004R are not junk if you have a good builder beefing them up correctly!

+1 mine is fine. The TV cable setup issues can be removed, for a price.... http://www.jakesperformance.com/200-4R.html
